FRIEDA RICHTER Obituary

Frieda Einstoss Blatt Richter, 97, died on January 9, 2010. She was born in Augsburg, Germany and married Dr. Kurt B. Blatt in 1934. Together they fled Nazi Germany and built a new life in Haverstraw, residing at 61 New Main Street. Frieda assisted her husband in managing a busy general medical practice that spanned all of Rockland County, encouraged and cared for their three children who attended Haverstraw public schools: Daniel Blatt of Los Angeles, Ruth Merkatz, of Rye, and Dr. Philip Blatt of Wilmington, De. She was active in numerous organizations including the Haverstraw PTA, the Good Samaritan Hospital Women's Auxiliary, Daughter's of Jacob Sisterhood, and Hadassah; she volunteered as a local air raid warden during WW II. Widowed in 1960, Frieda went to work as Administrative Assistant to the Dean of the Mt. Vernon School of Nursing. She married Max Richter in 1972. Following his untimely death in 1973, days before the Yom Kippur War, Frieda relocated to Florida, where she lived for the past 35 years surrounded by countless, loving friends who mourn her loss. Frieda will be missed terribly by her three devoted children and spouses: Marti Blumenthal, Irwin Merkatz and Paula Breen. She will also be missed by 6 grandchildren:Kenneth, Neil, Andrew, Jessica, Rebecca and Chelsea - and their respective spouses Sheri, Lynda, Lisa and Gregory all of whom loved, cherished and admired their Grandma for her kindness, strength, wisdom and sense of style. She was beloved by great grandchildren Clarisa, Lucienne, Samuel, Sebastian and Jessie who were lucky to know their Great Grandma Frieda. She is also being mourned in Buenos Aires and Puerto Rico by descendants of her three brothers, who fled Germany with Frieda's parents and settled in Argentina. Services will be held Jan 11, 2010, 12 noon, at Riverside Chapel, 21 Broad Street West, Mt. Vernon, NY.
