Gerard Carty Obituary

Carty, Gerard M.

Gerard M. Carty was born in Dublin, Ireland on January 6, 1954 to the late Eileen Conroy Carty and Patrick Carty. He was their fourth child. Gerry emigrated to New York City in 1958 with his family and grew up in the Bronx. He was educated at St. Angela Merici and St. Philip Neri grammar schools and Rice High School. Gerry had a wonderful sense of adventure and entertained his nieces and nephews with rich stories of his travels and exploits. Gerry was fiercely devoted to his family. He was a fine craftsman, bricklayer and stone mason and shared his talents with his family, creating beautiful spaces for them in marble, brick, wood and stone. He was a volunteer firefighter with the village of Pelham Manor, New York. An avid hiker and rock climber in his youth, Gerry completed lengthy stretches of the Appalachian and Long Trails in New England. Gerry was blessed with a unique sense of humor that drew many people to him over the years.

He has left numerous friends in Chapel Hill, NC, New York City, Pelham Manor, and his dear friend, Ann Gibney Glasheen in Alaska. In addition to his parents, Gerry was predeceased by two of his brothers, Michael and Donal. His loss is deeply regretted by his surviving siblings: Hugh (Peggy), Joan (Bob Halstead), Ann Bednarz (Carl), Gregory (Peggy), Ursula Baffuto (Tom), Patrick (Jeannie), and Paul (Kathy Galvin). Gerry was the beloved uncle of 19 nieces and nephews: Siobhan, Deirdre, Dan, Matt, Andrew, Brendan, Conor, Catherine, Garrett, Megan, Caitlin, Matthew, William, John, Emily, Patrick, Sarah, Thomas and Emma, and granduncle to Michael and Mia; Nicholas, Aidan, Sean, and Riley; and Fiona.
