Helga Johnson

New City - Helga Marie (Waack) Johnson, 86, died at the Joe Raso Hospice Residence in New City, NY on January 29, 2019 following a brief battle with cancer. She was born in New York City the daughter of Henry D.H. and Henny E. (Martens) Waack.

Helga lived in Rockland County for almost all her life. She graduated from Nyack High School, Class of 1950. She married Samuel A. Johnson May 6, 1955 in Nanuet, NY. They celebrated 63 years of marriage last May. He survives.

After high school, Helga graduated Wood Secretarial School, worked in the purchasing department at Lederle Labs, then attended New Paltz College. Helga raised a family and was active in church, community and artistic affairs. Known for her patience, attention to detail and kind demeanor, she had a profound influence wherever she devoted her time. A long-time member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, New City, NY - she was Congregational Council President, Lector, Altar Guild Member, and special to her: Congregational Representative for Baptism. Helga was PTA president, taught and jurored early American art for the Historical Society of Early American Decoration, she won awards for her paintings in watercolor societies in the Keys and Palm Beach, FL. Helga worked for twenty years at the New City Library, where her talent of repairing books was especially prized. Helga and Sam spent many winters in Florida where Helga volunteered at the Marathon Public Library, snorkeled and painted watercolors.

In addition to her parents, Helga was preceded by a son, Thomas. Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons. Andrew of New City, NY and Michael (Karen) of Old Fort, NC son: Sean (Sarah) McQuerry; daughters: Carole (Dan) Moore, Jennifer McQuerry, and six grandchildren. Helga is survived by her brother Dietrich (Nancy) Waack of Nyack. Also surviving are numerous loving nieces, nephews and devoted great nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are at the Joseph W. Sorce Funeral Home in West Nyack on Friday, February 1, from 6 - 8 PM. A funeral service to celebrate Helga's life will be held St. Paul's Lutheran Church in New City on Saturday, February 2, at Noon with a reception to follow. Burial is private at Germonds Cemetery in New City.

Those who wish to make a memorial donation in Helga's memory may make gifts to St. Paul's Lutheran Church 323 S. Main Street, New City, NY 10956.
