JAMES HORNER Obituary
James M. Horner Jr., MD, died on May 16th. He was 82. Dr. Horner was born April 14, 1922 in Stewart, TN to James and Lillian I. Horner. Dr. Horner received a BS Degree Magnum Cum Laude in absentia from Texas Wesleyan College, Fort Worth, TX and a Medical Degree from Baylor University College of Medicine, Houston, TX. Dr. Horner completed his residency in psychiatry at the Central Islip State Hospital, Central Islip, NY and the U.S.P.H.S. Hospital in Forth Worth TX. He served as a physician in the US Army in Fort Worth, TX from 1952-53 during the Korean War. Dr. Horner married June Schmill of Lafayette, LA in 1952. He moved to Scarsdale, NY in 1953 and was a Staff Psychiatrist and Associate Director at St. Vincent's Hospital and Medical Center in Harrison, New York from 1961-69. He then joined St. Joseph's Hospital in Yonkers, NY in 1969. At St. Joseph's Dr. Horner was the Chief Psychiatrist of the Mental Health Clinci and Director of the Continuing Day Treatment Program until his retirement in 1999 after 30 years at the hospital. Dr. Horner was also an attending phsyician at the Westchester County Medical Center from 1959 until his death. After retiring from St.Joseph's, he continued a private psychiatric practice up until late 2003. He ws a member of the Scarsdale Golf Club, the Hitchcock Presbyterian Church, the Masons and many medical associations, such as the Westchester County Medical Society, Westchester Psychiatric Society , Westchester Academy of Medicine, Academy of Psycho-Analysis Fellows, and the American Psychiatric Association. Dr. Horner enjoyed collecting antiques and activities with his family, such as attending church, the theater and opera, traveling and summers in Amagansett, NY. Dr. Horner is survived by his wife of 52 years, June; sons Timothy and James, daughter Holly; and two granddaughters. Funeral Service will be held Tuesday at 1pm at Hitchcock Presbyterian Church, Scarsdale, NY. Friends may call Monday evening from 7-9pm at the Ballard Durand Funeral Home, 2 Maple Ave., at South Broadway, White Plains, NY. Interment will be at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.
