I knew Joel through his seafood business. Im sorry to say that I only recently learned of his passing as we lost touch as he stepped back from the day to day operations of his business. He was a great man and a pillar in the industry. I learned many things from Joel, who was always willing to teach. He is and will be missed.

I was very distressed to learn of Joel's passing. I was a member of Temple Emmanuel of Southern Westchester until I moved to Rockland County about ten years ago, and I served on the temple's Board of Trustees. As president of the temple, Joel provided strong ethical and operational leadership. As an individual and a role model, Joel had a profound impact on me personally. Whenever an issue or an event came up, he would present the news and, if needed, suggest a course of action, often concluding with the gentle observation that "it's the right thing to do." I remember this statement every day, whenever something occurs that requires a response: we should always take a particular course of action because "it's the right thing to do." There is no better advice. Like many who have valued his leadership, I still hope to live up to this principle. I wish all the best to Joel's family, and I hope they will accept my heartfelt sorrow and condolences.
