JOHN MAHONEY Obituary

MAHONEY, FR. JOHN, OFM CAP.Capuchin Franciscan friar John Mahoney died at the age of 66 on Wednesday, December 15, 2004 following a bout with cancer. Born in Yonkers, NY to John Mahoney and Margaret O'Connell on November 1, 1938, John was invested with the habit of the Capuchin Franciscan Order of the Province of St. Mary on August 31, 1956. He professed his first vows on September 1, 1957 and made his final profession on September 1, 1960. He next completed his studies and was ordained to priesthood on November 28, 1964. Immediately following ordination until 1973, he was named Director of St. Francis Retreat House in Garrison, NY, while at the same time serving as Librarian at Mary Immaculate Friary also located in Garrison, NY. Beginning in 1973, John served as a hospital chaplain in Smithtown, Long Island (1973-1976), next at Wassaic (1976-1982), then at North Shore Hospital in Manhasset, Long Island (1982-1984). In 1984, he served on the parish staff of St. John the Baptist parish in midtown Manhattan until 1990. From 1990 to 1994, he served as Parochial Vicar at Blessed Sacrament Parish in Manchester, NH. Beginning in 1994, he undertook the position of Provincial Archivist, living first at St. Francis friary in Garrison (1994-1998) and then at St. Conrad friary in White Plains, NY until 2002. In September 2002, he moved to St. Lawrence friary in Beacon, NY, where he served as business manager. He is survived by his cousins: Winnie Lefebvre of the Bronx, NY and Bill Hill of Yonkers, NY, as well as his nephew, John O'Connell of Sherman, CT. Visitation will be at St. Clare's Friary, 110 Shennard Place ond Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, December 18 at 11 am.
