JOHN STIX Obituary

John Stix, well known director and beloved teacher, who taught acting for the last thirty years at the Juilliard School in New York City died of a heart attack at a hospital in Hackensack, NJ. He was 83 years old and lived in Nyack, NY. The St. Louis native was a 1942 graduate of Black Mountain College in North Carolina, where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Musicology. After Army signal Corp. Service in Europe during World War II, he earned a Master's Degree in Fine Arts from the Yale School of Drama. He directed Helen Hayes in several plays, such as M. Barries Mary Rose, The Wisteria Trees and What Every Woman Knows. Among other plays he directed in New York were Family Business, The Dark at the Top of the Stairs, Arthur Millers Revival of The Price and Alan Paton's Too Late the Phalarope. From 1970 to 1973, he was Artistic Director of the Baltimore Centre Stage. As a lifelong friend of Helen Hayes, he actively participated in the transformation of the former Tappan Zee Playhouse into The Helen Hayes Theatre. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the John Stix Juilliard Student Fund. Checks can be made out to Juilliard and sent to Juilliard, Centre Plaza, NYC, NY.
