i too worked with joe at newsweek and will always remember his even tempered manner and yes, 'his shy smile', especially in those trying moments when he came into the the lab hoping (praying?) his film was ready to show. he was appreciative when it was ready, disappointed but not demanding if it wasnt. except if he had to come back a second time!! joe was truly a good soul and i am saddened by the loss.

Thank you for taking care of my children. They feel the pain of your
passing as do I. They so appreciated all the effort you put into your job as you touched their lives. Thank you, thank you, thank you. You were too young. Rest in peace and God bless you.

Dear Dwyers,
My condolences to you all. Life is so strange! It seems to me like not long ago that Joe visited our home; and we were the family whose world had turned upside-down. The unexpected death, the sweet young father, and we left to grieve! Such a kind young man. Joe sat at our dining room table and played quiet, friendly games of backgammon with me for hours, as the adults swirled round us. An island of peace amidst those frenetic comforters, thirty-six years ago. And now it is he who is gone, and you all left to mourn! I hadn’t seen your father in at least thirty years; yet I can hardly find words to express how I sincerely feel for your family at this time.

Dear Elizabeth and all of Joe's family,
Like so many others here, I worked with Joe at Newsweek for a long time, and always appreciated his mix of wry humor and professionalism. I am so sorry for your loss. Your husband and father was a real gentleman in the best sense of the term. We will all miss him.

Dear Margaret and your family,
The loss you are experiencing now is so overwhelming, I know. Your friends are here for you to lean on. Time does help. I lost my own father 3 1/2 years ago and it does get easier and I always feel him with me. May you all be supported during this time by those who understand your pain. All my love and thoughts are with you in this difficult time. Love, Roz Cohn

Dear Margaret and Family,
I was lucky enough to have worked with Joe for many years at Newsweek, and it was always a pleasure. He was great at what he did, he had a wry sense of humor and he was always the real gentleman, in the best sense of that term. I'm so sorry for your loss. My prayers are with you.

Dear Margaret (and Family,)
I am stunned and send my deepest condolences. I'm so happy I met your dad when he came to "Fifth of July" with your mom. All I could think of was "what an adorable couple." I know he was so proud of you. Please know that I am thinking about you and wish I could be there to put a rose in your hair and hug you on the chaise.

Joe and I worked together for a long time at Newsweek. He would turn towards me with his warm shy smile and and make me feel like somehow we would get through another deadline. He was a wonderful person, this is so shocking and sad. I wish all his family my deepest sympathies.

Joe will always be among my favorite ex-colleagues from our Newsweek days together. He was an absolute champion of the under-dog, a quite wonderful singer, an incredibly hard-working and conscientious editor of great (and oft under-appreciated) good taste, a sweet and literate man. A gentleman. Our time on Newsweek International together was a happy and exciting one and I will always treasure Joe's friendship and trust as will dozens of photographers around the world.

My heart and prayers go out to the entire Dwyer and Gaffney families. Joe's smile and laugh were always contagious. He was very encouraging when I began thinking about journalism as a career and I always appreciated his willingness to share his expertise. All my love, Patrice

I worked with Joe at Newsweek for 21 years. He was a sweet man and a wonderful colleague. I'll always remember his love of poetry and his fury at injustice of any kind. My heart goes out to his wife Liz, their three children, and their family and friends, all of whom will miss Joe terribly.

Joe, Liz, Kath, Mike and myself sat on the floor in someone's house 35 years ago discussing the merits of Bob Dylan's music -- whether the music or the lyrics were more important. Joe came down on the side of lyrics and me on music in a very spirited discussion! So interesting! I know Joe was a lovely soul and he will be missed. Love Mary Collins

I don't know if I ever spoke to Mr. Dwyer, but I remember seeing him in the halls when I was in eighth grade. I can see him very clearly in my head right now.
To his family - I know that nothing anyone can say is enough, but regardless, I am so sorry. All my love goes out to you. I hope that you, at least, are given the time and space you need to grieve.

Joe was one of the nicest people in that great group of nice people that was the Newsweek Photo Department. I can only imagine how good he was as a middle school teacher. My heart goes out to his family.
