Katherine Merkle Obituary
Katherine M. Merkle, 85, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 16, 2016, following a long, courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease. Born on August 3, 1931 in Upper Manhattan to the late Anna and Peter Degnan. "Kitty" spent over 30 years working in parochial school education, which included positions at Dominican College in Orangeburg, NY, St. Thomas Aquinas College in Sparkill, NY and St. Joseph Regional High School in Montvale, NJ. In addition she volunteered her services over the years at St. Dominic's Home in Blauvelt, NY and St. Agatha's Home in Nanuet, NY. Katherine will be sorely missed based on her lifetime of good deeds and love for all. She was a loyal and caring friend to everyone she met.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 60 years, Walter of Pearl River, NY, her sons Walter Jr. (Alicia) of Powder Springs, Georgia and Peter of Pearl River, NY, she is also survived by her loving grandchildren; Christopher, Peter, Amanda, Kevin and Kathryn. Sister in law Mary Degnan of Dobbs Ferry, NY as well as many wonderful nieces and nephews from the Merkle and Degnan families. "Kitty" is predeceased by her brother John (Jack) Degnan. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in honor and memory of Katherine at any Alzheimer's Foundation or research center of your choice.
Visiting is Wednesday, 2-4 and 7-9pm at Assumma-Shankey Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial is Thursday 11 am at St. Margaret's Church in Pearl River, NY, burial to follow at Ascension Cemetery in Airmont. NY.
