Lillian Toolan Obituary

Lillian L. Toolan

Yonkers/Peach Lake - Lillian L. Toolan, a long time resident of Yonkers and Peach Lake, Brewster, NY and recently a resident of Bluemont, VA passed on to eternal life on February 22, 2020 surrounded by her grateful and loving family at the age of 96. Lil, as she was known to her family and friends, was born on July 14, 1923 to the late Philip Herold Lohrfink and Violet Lemborg Lohrfink. She married John M. (Jack) Toolan on September 3, 1944 at The original Calvary Baptist Church in Yonkers, NY. Jack predeceased her on November 21, 1992. She is also predeceased by her daughter, Gail L. Mooney on January 25, 2015. She is survived by her daughter: Barbara A. Toolan of Schenectady, NY, three grandchildren: Christine (Mark) Vitkus and Cynthia Jeffery, both of VA, Zariel (Liz) Toolan of St. Louis, MO, and eight great grandchildren: Sara, Colin and Kyle Vitkus, Summer, Lucas and Willow Jeffery, Maeve and Finn Toolan. Four brothers: Philip, John (Bud), William, and Charles (Dewey) predeceased her. Lil was passionately devoted to and proud of her immediate and extended family which included 9 nieces and nephews, 22 grand nieces and nephews, and 34 great grand nieces and nephews. Lil was known by all who came into contact with her as a lady through and through. She was kind, thoughtful, gracious, and loved unconditionally. She lived by the golden rule, treating everyone with dignity and respect. Lil's essence was well described in a note written by a grand nephew on a recent birthday: "It was not the outside decor that attracted the young nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. It was the open-armed hospitality of a woman determined to make you smile and brighten your day. The greeting was always warm, sincere and loving. The tranquility and grace of such a woman and the things we learned from her graciousness were not wasted. It would mold us, teach us, and comfort us in how to be better men and women". Visitation at Hawthorne Funeral Home 11am - 1pm on Monday March 2, 2020, interment immediately following at Kensico Cemetery, Valhalla, NY. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Lil's honor be made to: Art Together, C/O Catherine Fetterman, 102 Carlton St., SW, Leesburg, VA 20175. Art Together, a program that Lil thoroughly enjoyed, allows nursing home residents to express themselves through art as a form of therapy.

My fondest memories are the countless times me, my brothers and cousins stopped to see Aunt Lil on Lakeshore Drive at Peach Lake. Always greeted with a hug smile, warm hug and tasty treat. Kind. Loving. Giving.

We will miss you Aunt Lil.

God bless

Sorry to hear of Lils passing. I will always remember spending time with her at Red Gate and Pine Island. She was always fun to talk to. My kids enjoyed her company as well. Especially when she pulled out the hand made jewelry. She was a funny lady and tough too ! I witnessed her getting run over by a horse and shook it off like nothing. This wasnt too long ago either. She produced a fine family for sure. Looking forward to seeing her in glory.

The obituary beautifully captures the Lillian I have come to know - a most gentle, patient, talented, generous, thoughtful, considerate and loving person. There are people who enter our lives who bring out the best in us, and model for us what we long to be for others. Lillian is that blessing and role model for me.

Lillian began participating in my art programs last summer at the nursing home, and I was quickly attracted to her. I remember, before we had even painted together, I brought her and her roommate some adult coloring pages and pencils to give them something enjoyable to do while I awaited being able to get them signed up for painting classes. Lillian was eager to color - and show me the beautiful cards she had painted. Soon after, I got to see and display her larger paintings, and observe how she gently encouraged the other residents to not be afraid to make art - and the joy it gave her to give beauty to others.

I am honored that my art program has been designated for memorial donations. I know it would make her happy to be able to have others paint because of her. We currently have 19 residents at LNRC who rely on scholarships from my benevolent fund to be able to paint regularly. On behalf of them and their families, I thank you for sponsoring their joy on Lillian's behalf.

Thank you Miss Lillian! I love you and will miss you at LNRC. I look forward to being with you again in the most beautiful place ever!

With my condolences, prayers and abundant gratitude,
