Lowell Schulman Obituary

Lowell M. Schulman

AGE: 91 •

Lowell M. Schulman, a builder/developer who created the concept of campus office parks along the Cross Westchester Expressway between White Plains and Rye died on October 7, 2017 of natural causes. He was 91.

Schulman's career followed his own individual game plan. A 1949 graduate of Babson College where he absorbed the skills of entrepreneurship, he set off to Hollywood to join a talent firm (at no pay) to learn the intricacies of the business. Halfway across the country, he learned that his father had developed throat cancer. Goodbye Hollywood! He was compelled to return to White Plains to help his mother and sister operate their small but fashionable women's specialty store. He agreed to a one year commitment to stabilize the store after which he hoped to find other career challenges. It never happened. He married, produced four children, and spent the next fourteen years operating a business he disliked but which had become very successful. During those fourteen years, he became involved with real estate and spent his spare time in acquiring and improving small commercial properties in the White Plains area.

Schulman's avocation was golf in various forms. In 1963 he purchased 300 acres of fallow land in Purchase, New York along the Anderson Hill. His plan was to build a new golf club at the core of the land and then to surround same with quality residences. Although he had only limited capital and no experience in this field, his entrepreneurship carried him through. The new private club, Brae Burn, was the first new golf course to be built in the metropolitan area since 1929. Twenty-five years later he also founded and built the Atlantic Golf Club in Bridgehampton.

In 1965, he acquired two hundred and eighty acres of undeveloped land along both sides of the newly developed Cross Westchester Expressway, Route 287, in the townships of White Plains and Harrison. He was able to secure a new office building zone called Campus Office Parks. The area was soon dubbed the "Platinum Mile". When completed, there were six parks and twenty-one office buildings plus a free standing bank.

Along with his real estate developments, Schulman served in a leadership position in a number of eleemosynary activities including Lincoln Center Theater, The Jewish Museum, the U.S.G.A., United Jewish Appeal, and the Metropolitan Golf Association.

Schulman served in World War II, Army Air Corp. He is survived by his wife, Dianne Wallace and his children, Linda Dacey (John Dacey), Robert Schulman, Barbara Schulman and Ami Schulman, as well as Pamela Marcus (Jeffrey Erskine) and grandchildren Ariel Schulman, Yaniv Schulman (Laura Schulman), Fiona Breslin, Dillon Breslin, Ryan Erskine (Brittany Erskine), Camille Breslin, Andrew Erskine, Kyra Breslin, Caleb Breslin, Haley Erskine and great grandchild Cleo Schulman.

The family will be receiving visitors beginning at 10 AM on Wednesday Oct 11th at the Schulman Chapel at Congregation Kol-Ami, 252 Soundview Ave, White Plains, NY 10606 followed by a funeral service in the adjacent sanctuary starting at 11 AM. The family will also be receiving visitors following the interment at Old Oaks Country Club, 3100 Purchase St, Purchase, NY 10577 from 1:30 to 4:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to White Plains Hospital.

As a new member of Atlantic, I didn't know many members. Lowell went out of his way to include me in his group and make me feel welcome. I will never forget his kindness.

What a life! Accomplished yet humble. Having it all and paying it forward.
I'd like to think that the game of golf had something to do with all of it, but Lowell would have been that same gentle man if he'd never picked up a club. i only wished the younger people had a chance to know him better. They'd have loved him too.
