Mario Centenaro Obituary

Centenaro, Mario

Mario Centenaro of Nanuet, NY, 93 years old, passed away on May 9, 2016. Mario was born in a Northern Italian town near Genoa. By 1939, war in Europe appeared imminent, so in order to save Mario from the war, his parents decided to come to America with the hope of returning when the crisis cleared up. They arrived in New York on July 28, 1939. Hitler marched into Poland just 32 days later. Unfortunately, after that there was Pearl Harbor and the US entered the war - Mario was subsequently drafted. He trained as an infantry man with the 105 division at Fort Jackson, SC and fought in the battles of Normandy, Northern France and Central Europe. After returning from the war, Mario was employed for several years by the US Army Ordnance Department at the Brooklyn P.O.E. Then he accepted employment with the City of New York Sanitation Bureau of Motor Equipment as a machinist and subsequently became Foremen of Mechanics. He retired from that position after 30 years of service. As a retiree he enjoyed hunting, target shooting, biking and hiking. He traveled extensively with his wife Josephine.

He is survived by his wife Josephine, sons John, Richard and William and his 3 grandchildren, Sara, Billy and Tommy. Family will receive friends on Thursday, May 19 from 6-8 pm at Higgins Funeral Home in New City, NY.
