MARTHA CULLAM

Martha Sarah Jane Cullam (Peggy) died peacefully at The Country House in Westchester on June 27, 2008.. She was born March 29, 1911 at Merestead off Byram Lake Road in Mt. Kisco, New York. Her parents, Isabella Kate Harris and Edward Cullam, immigrated from Ireland in 1903 and eventually settled in Mt. Kisco where her father was superintendent of the Merestead estate for over 50 years. Martha attended the one-room school house near her home on Sarles Street and graduated from Mt. Kisco High School in 1929. Martha spent many years as Secretary at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Mt. Kisco, then as Receptionist/Medical Assistant for Dr. Leonard Haynes in Bedford Village before serving as Clerk for the Town of Bedford until her retirement in 1981. For many years (63) , she was active in the American Legion AuxiIiary- Unit 136 in Mt. Kisco. In addition to her parents, Martha was predeceased by her brothers, Edward Harris Cullam and John William Cullam and a nephew, John William Cullam, Jr. (Billy). Surviving are her nieces and nephew - Linda Cullam Bitter, Phyllis Cullam Tresnicky, Thor Johannessen. and Leanne Cullam Summers and a cousin, Natalie Goggins The family wants to thank Martha's many friends and caregivers who helped make her last days comfortable. Her private caregivers, Yvonne Isaacs and Winsome Garner, the staff at the Country House in Westchester and the representatives from Phelps Hospice, some of the dearest, kindest people in their field; our sincere thanks to all. Visitation will be at Oelker & Cox Funeral Home 262 E. Main St, Mt Kisco on Monday from 7 PM to 9 PM. The Funeral will be at St. Mark's Episcopal Church on Tuesday at 2:30PM. Reverend Philip Kunhardt will officiate, assisted by Reverend Will Porter and Sub -Deacon, Don Ford, both longtime friends of the deceased. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Mt. Kisco.Memorial donations can be made to St. Mark's Church , the American Legion Auxiliary-Unit 136 , to Phelps Hospice (701 N. Broadway, Sleepy Hollow, N.Y) or to one's favorite charity.
