MARVIN KARP Obituary

Marvin Allen Karp, died September 26, 2003 in Cortlandt Manor, NY. Born in Bronx, NY on November 29, 1921, Marvin was the first child of Charles and Jeanette Karp (nee Goldstein). He and his brother, Irwin, were raised in New York City. Marvin attended New York City public schools, and later, Columbia University. Upon graduation he served in the United States Army infantry during World War II, attaining the rank of second lieutenant. Following the war, he graduated from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. He was recalled in the Army, serving in the Korean War as a first lieutenant. In 1953, he married Ruth Hodes; they lived in Manhattan. Their son, Andrew, was born in 1956. Marvin held a succession of editorial jobs in New York City, including writing for the Howdy Doody Show, and serving as an editor at Magazine Management and Popular Library. Following a move to Tarrytown, NY in 1963, he worked as a writer and producer for the educational media company Guidance Associates in Pleasantville, NY, which later merged with Harcourt Brace Jovanovich. In the late 1970's, Marvin established the MAK Production Group, which produced sales training videos and publications. He also wrote several travel books. Marvin and Ruth moved to Somers, NY in 1990. Their grandson, Joshua, was born the following year. He and Ruth moved to Peekskill in 2000, and recently relocated to Cortlandt Manor. Marvin is predeceased by his brother, Irwin, as well as by Ruth, who died September 24, 2003. He is survived by his son, Andrew, daughter-in-law Deborah, grandson Joshua, niece Cindy, and nephews Jeffrey and Douglas. In lieu of a memorial service, the Karp family will be receiving visitors today at their home in Croton-on-Hudson.
