Matthew J. McCune, 56, of Stony Point passed away on September 12, 2016. He was born on July 11, 1960 in the Bronx to John J. & Marie L. (Russo) McCune. Matthew joined the Rockland County Sheriff's Dept. as a corrections officer in Aug. 1981. He began his career in the Sheriff's Dept.'s Patrol Division as a patrol officer in June 1984. Matt advanced to Sgt, to LT, and to Captain, at which rank he retired in April 2016, after 35 years with the Sheriff's Dept. Matt also served 20 years on their SWAT team and as a supervisor with the Marine & Transport Units. Matt was a member of the Valley Cottage Sportsman club, of FOP, and of the Rockland County Sherriff's Deputy Assoc. For over 40 years, Matthew was an active member of the Boy Scouts of America, first as a Scout in Pack 27/ Troop 27 Valley Cottage; as Program Director in Bullowa Day Camp in Stony Point; as Advisor to Explorer Post 70 (Law Enforcement-RCSD); and as Assistant then Scoutmaster of Troop 61 Stony Point. Matt was also a Board Member of the Hudson Valley Council where, in 2013, he received their highest award, The Silver Bear, in recognition of his leadership and lifelong devotion to Camp Bullowa, a special place that he guarded, preserved, and called home. During his life, Matt enjoyed hunting and fishing, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family. He is predeceased by his daughter Meredith (1989) and Matt is survived by his loving parents John & Marie McCune of Valley Cottage, his adored & cherished sons Michael & Andrew McCune both of Stony Point, his beloved brothers John McCune of Mineola, NY and Steven McCune of Nanuet, NY, and his nieces & nephews.

The family will receive friends & relatives on Friday Sept. 16th from 3PM - 9PM at the TJ McGowan Sons Funeral Home 71 N. Central Highway Garnerville, NY. As I often continue to remember Matt as I do now, my heart remains sadden of his premature passing. I am sorry I was away when it happened. I remember Matt as a well spoken gentleman, always seemed to be relaxed and calm.
Matt always offering to help when needed during his time with the Boy Scouts of Troop 61 in Stony Point. He had a great sense of humor and a nice smile.

I will always continue to remember Matt. I thoughts go out to his family, especially Michael & Andrew .

Hello, I was a friend of Matthew's back in the Camp Bullowa days...my Uncle Ralph Williams loved him, as did many people at the camp. I would occasionally see Matt when he would visit Uncle Ralph & Aunt Heilde after they retired and moved to Branchville NY. I last spoke with him July - and he made me laugh, as he usually could. Matt had such a kind but firm disposition -- I am shocked at his loss. My deepest and sincerest condolences...I will always think of Matthew with fond memories ~
