Maureen Archdeacon Obituary
Sister Maureen Archdeacon, OP of Dominican Convent, Sparkill, New York died on November 5, 2009 in Siena Hall Infirmary, Dominican Convent, 175 Route 340, Sparkill, NY. Born in New York City on March 28, 1923, Maureen was the daughter of Thomas and Mary O'Connor Archdeacon. She entered the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary in Sparkill on September 8, 1943, and became known as Sister Jean Angela, professing her first vows in 1945 and her final vows in 1952. Sister Maureen earned a BS in Education from Manhattan College, Bronx, NY in 1952 and an MS in Education from St. John' s University, Queens, NY in 1974. During her professional life, Sister Maureen was an elementary school teacher and served in the Archdiocese of New York and Dioceses of Brooklyn and Rockville Center. She taught at St. Columba, Chester (1945-48); St. Joseph, Bronx, NY (1948-53); St. Mary Magdalen, Springfield Gardens, Brooklyn, NY (1953-58); Holy Family, Hicksville, NY (1958-61, 1966-1998); Mary Queen of Heaven, Brooklyn, NY (1961-66). From 1998-2000 Sr. Maureen offered local community service at Holy Family until she took up residence in Siena Hall Infirmary, Sparkill. Sister Maureen is predeceased by her brother John and her sister Kathleen. She is survived by many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel, Dominican Convent, Sparkill, NY on Monday, November 9 at 10:30 am. Visitation is on Sunday, November 8 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at the Convent, 175 Rte. 340, Sparkill, NY. Interment will be in St. Agnes Cemetery in Sparkill. Arrangements are by Higgins Funeral Home.
