Richard Freud Obituary

Freud, Richard

Richard (Dick) Freud, a 52 year resident of Pearl River, NY died Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at The Joe Raso Hospice Residence in New City, NY, at the age of 86.

He served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War as an Army Ranger. Dick was a member of the New York City Police Department attaining the rank of Lieutenant in the Mid-Town North Precinct. After 33 years of dedicated service Dick retired in 1993. He later enjoyed retirement with his loving wife of 62 years, Rita, splitting their time in Sun City, AZ for a number of years. After returning home to their most beloved town of Pearl River they spent the remaining years in the "neighborhood" on the west end.

Born in Jackson Heights, Queens on August 15, 1930, to Emily and Emanuel Freud, he was predeceased by his parents. Dick loved Pearl River. He was a lifelong parishioner of St. Margaret R. C. Church. He volunteered for over 20 years as Bingo Captain; church lector; Eucharistic Minister and altar server. He was a member of the Pearl River Elks; Knights of Columbus and former treasurer for the New York City Police Departments anchor Club and the Rockland County Shields. Dick was dedicated to the community and his church as well as his many friends over the years. He was an avid hockey fan and enjoyed playing hockey for the NYPD and playing with the retired NYPD and FDNY members. He later became an official referee for the bantam league at West Point Military Academy until he was 78 years of age when he finally hung up his skates. He always loved his time at the Woodbury Rod and Gun Club over the years. He saved many lives over his decades of service in the NYPD; loved his family and was a devout Catholic. Dick was always quick with a helping hand and friendly smile. He lived honestly and loved his job and his family dearly. Dick loved all things Irish. He will be forever in our hearts and minds.

He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Rita A, Freud; his children, Susanne (Bill) Shand of Beacon, NY; Cathleen (Richard) Peslak of Highland Lakes, NJ; Michael (Kathy) Freud of Amherst, NH; Richard( Eileen) of Pearl River; Matthew (Nancy) Freud of Shrewsbury, MA; his grandchildren: Timmy, Devlin, Liam, Amanda, Alex, Jamie, Nick, Olivia; Emily, Kaitlyn, Ashley and Kevin.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10:00 AM Tuesday at St. Margaret R. C. Church, Pearl River. Burial will follow at Maryrest Cemetery, Mahwah, NJ. Visiting is Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM at Wyman-Fisher Funeral Home Inc.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to The Joe Raso Hospice Residence, 415 Buena Vista Rd, New City, NY 10956.
