ROBERT COE Obituary
Robert Coe of White Plains passed away peacefully on November 2, 2010, a resident of over 50 years. He was born in Johnson City, Tennessee, June 16, 1926, to Lieutenant Colonel Cleveland Beach Coe and Margaret Summers Coe. Graduating from Hobart College with a B. A. degree in 1949, Mr. Coe took his LL. B (J.D.) from the University of Virginia in 1952, and an LL. M from Georgetown University in 1956. He was admitted to the bars of Virginia, Tennessee, and New York, and was qualified to practice law before the United States Supreme Court. In May 1944, Mr. Coe enlisted in the army as a private. He was released from active duty as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1947. He graduated from Command and General Staff College with honors in 1973. He was Liaison Officer, Admissions Department, U.S. Military Academy, West Point New York 19731978. He was made an Honorary Gunner, 69th (West Riding) Medium Regiment, Royal Artillery, and achieved the rank of Colonel, Field. Artillery, AUS, Retired. From 1952-1958 he was a trial attorney, Tax Division, U.S. Department of Justice, in Washington DC. From 19581984 he was a Tax Attorney and Tax Manager for the American Telephone and Telegraph Company in New York and Bedminster, New Jersey. He retired in 1984. Since then he has been in private practice, and has served as an Arbitrator and Assigned Counsel (pro bono) at the City Court in White Plains, New York and has also done work in the State Supreme Court. Colonel Coe was an active Episcopalian and has held various offices in the Church. Among other organizations he has been a board member of Scottish Heritage, USA; President, University Club of White Plains; and a member of the Salvation Army Advisory Board. He held numerous memberships including the Society of the Cincinnati, the American Legion; Veterans of Foreign Wars; Sons of Confederate Veterans (Group Commander); The White Plains Historical Society; Pilgrims of the United States; The Army and Navy Club; The Stamford Yacht Club; Union League Club; and the Sigma Phi Society. He was also proud of his achievements as past President of the St. Andrews Society of the State of New York. Colonel Coe is survived by his wife of 57 years, Sally Crowe Gillespie; his four children, Sharon Coe Glen of Hampshire, England, Patricia Coe of Atlanta, Georgia, Laurie Coe Boyle of Stamford, Connecticut, and David Coe of Finksburg, Maryland, and five grandchildren, Grace, Robert and Andrew Glen; James Boyle IV and Robert V, the joy of his life. Reposing at Ballard-Durand Funeral Home, 2 Maple Avenue at South Broadway, White Plains on Sunday, November 7, 2010 from 2 to 4PM and 7 to 9 PM. A Celebration of Robert's Life will be held at 11:00 AM Monday November 8, 2010 at Christ Church Greenwich, 254 East Putnam Avenue, Greenwich, CT. Interment to follow at a future date in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia.
