ROBERT CYPHER Obituary
Robert S. Cypher Sr. died on May 30, 2008 after a brief illness. He was born September 1, 1918, in White Plains, New York to Ella K. and Charles I. Cypher. After graduating from White Plains High School in 1937, he entered the U.S. Army in 1941 joining the "Fighting 69th"� (165th) Regiment of the 27th Infantry Division. He was deployed to Hawaii after Pearl Harbor, and participated in the invasions of Saipan and Okinawa. He was discharged October 4, 1945, with the rank of Staff Sergeant (T-3). His awards included the Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign medal with two stars (Central Pacific and Ryukyus), and the World War II Victory Medal. Upon his return to White Plains,He earned a degree at the Pace Business Institute, worked at Dunn and Bradstreet, and performed in an amateur Gilbert and Sullivan Company. He married his wife of 55 years, Doris Barry on May 16, 1953. He then began working for the American Society of Civil Engineering, and was Advertising Sales Manager for it's magazine until his retirement in 1983. He was a parishioner of St. Bernard's church, serving as a lector and as a member of the parish council. He was a member of SHORE (Sheltering Homeless is Our Responsibility) He was involved in recreational activities, coaching in the city's youth baseball program, and serving on its executive committee. He was an avid race walker and fisherman. He began participating in the New York Marathon at age 78 and continued through age 82. He was a member of the 69th Regiment Veterans Corps, the Westchester Road Runners Club, the 27th Division Association,and and was a trustee of the White Plains Historical Society, and the White Plains Rural Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Doris, his sons, Robert Jr. of Rye, Paul of Somers, Richard of Irvington, his daughter, Anne Mundy of Milford Connecticut, and seven grandchildren: Robert III, Catherine, Courtney, Ronan, Taoig, Renee Tessier and Caitlin Mundy. Visitation will at the McMahon Lyon and Hartnett Funeral Home, at 491 Mamaroneck Avenue, White Plains, New York from 4-7 pm on Sunday June 1, and 6-8pm on Monday, June 2. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Bernard's Church, 348 South Lexington Avenue, White Plains, New York, with interment to follow at the White Plains Rural Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be sent to St. Bernard's Church or the Lord's Pantry
