Robert Sher Obituary
Dr. Robert A. Sher, 78, died January 14, 2007 at Good Samaritan Hospital where he practiced medicine for thirty-one years specializing in obstetrics and gynecology. Dr. Sher was an intern and surgical resident at Maimonides Hospital followed by four years residency at Mount Sinai Hospital culminating as Chief Resident in his final year. He was awarded the Brettauer Fellowship for research. He was a Full Attending Physician at Good Samaritan and Nyack Hospitals from 1957 until 1981. From 1982-1998, Dr. Sher served as Medical Director of Personnel Health as well as the Drug Abuse & Rehabilitation Section at Good Samaritan Hospital. In addition, he was the Gynecological Consultant at Helen Hayes Rehabilitation Hospital, Camp Jawonio and the Women's Health Division of the Rockland County Health Department. Dr. Sher was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. He was a member of many medical societies both locally and regionally and was published in several medical journals. He was a founding member of the New City Jewish Center and served as President in 1962. He was the son of Beatrice and Nathan Sher and was raised in Brooklyn, NY and lived in New City since 1957. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen, daughter, Meryl Sher of NY, daughter and son-in-law, Alyce and Michael Kitt of New City, son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Helen Sher of Huntington, five grandchildren: Alana, Nate, Markus, Meri and Kristopher and his sister, Barbara Danziger and her husband, Dr. Irwin Danziger of New City. Dr. Sher was known for his ability to diagnose early and saved many women over the years. He is remembered by patients for his kindness, his thoroughness and gentle demeanor. His loyalty, humor and thirst for knowledge were appreciated by friends, colleagues and loved ones. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 16, 2006 at New City Jewish Center.
