SUSAN SHERLOCK Obituary

Wife of The Journal News publisher, dies at age 57. Dr. Susan P. Sherlock, 57, a clinical psychologist and wife of Gary F.Sherlock, publisher of The Journal News, died Saturday, December 9, 2000 in Boise, Idaho. Dr. Sherlock had suffered from cancer for more than three years. Dr. Sherlock most recently was involved in a private practice of psychology in Greenwich, Conn., but was also licensed in New York state and Idaho. Her work involved women's issues: marriage and family therapy, assertiveness training, the treatment of eating disorders and hypno-behavioral therapy for smoking cessation and weight control. Dr. Sherlock was born Nov. 11, 1943, in Westfield, Mass., the daughter of Dele and Victor Paounoff. She graduated magna cum laude from Smith College in 1965. She received her master's degree in psychology from the University of Colorado in 1967, and her doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Utah in 1977. Dr. Sherlock began her professional career in 1967 as a psychologist at the Walter E. Fernald State School in Waverly, Mass. From 1971 to 1978, she worked as a clinical psychologist for a number of public agencies in Idaho, including the state Mental Retardation Division, the Crippled Children's Service of the State Department of Health and the Department of Environmental and Community Services. She was involved in a private practice in Boise from 1978 to 1987. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi, and the recipient of the John Cambareri Award for Excellence in Psychology, given by the state of Idaho in 1989. She is a past president of the Idaho Psychological Association. The Sherlocks were married in Boise on Jan. 2, 1982. The couple moved to Connecticut in 1987. They have made their home in Rye since 1994. Dr. Sherlock enjoyed skiing, camping, tennis, hiking and reading. She was an accomplished gourmet cook and loved restaurants and dining out. She loved the outdoors and her more cherished times were spent in Sun Valley, Idaho. In addition to her husband and parents, Dr. Sherlock is survived by two children, Dr. Victoria Hayden Goltry of Boise and J. Dodds Hayden of Sun Valley; two step-children, Blake Sherlock of New York City and Regan Sherlock of Seattle; one grandchild, Jack Hayden Goltry of Boise; a sister, Barbara Hartley Spohn of Mashpee, Mass.; and her son-in-law, Dr. Brian Goltry of Boise. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Cathedral of the Rockies in Boise. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Susan P. Sherlock Training Scholarship Fund at the Womens and Childrens Alliance, 720 Washington, Boise, Idaho 83702.
