Lardner, Sister Theresa, OP

Sister Theresa Lardner, OP, formerly Sister Mary Brian, a member of the Sisters of Saint Dominic of Blauvelt, NY for the past fifty eight years, died peacefully on Monday, May 20, 2013.

Sister Theresa "Tecie" was born to Thomas J. Lardner and Mary Ann Morgan on March 14, 1938. She entered the Sisters of Saint Dominic on September 11, 1955. She received a BS in Education from Dominican College in Orangeburg, NY; an MA in Catechetical Theology from Manhattan College, NY; a Certificate in Theological Studies from the Jesuit School of Theology, Berkley CA and a Certificate in Spiritual Direction from the Aquinas Institute, St. Louis, MO.

Sister Theresa taught in many elementary schools in the Archdiocese of New York. She was also Archdiocesan Regional Coordinator, Office of Christian Family Development, Staten Island Office; Religious Education Coordinator, St. Joseph, Millbrook, NY; Pastoral Minister at Holy Trinity, West Point, NY; Pastoral Minister Our Lady of Loreto Parish, Cold Spring, NY; Leadership Team, Sisters of Saint Dominic; Co-director of the Collaborative Dominican Novitiate, Manchester, MO; Director of New Membership and Formation Director, Sisters of St. Dominic; Secretary St. John's School, Goshen, NY; Liturgist, Our Lady of Mt Carmel, Tenafly, NJ; Spiritual Care Coordinator of United Hospice of Rockland, NY, 2009-2012.

In addition to her religious congregation, Sr. Tecie is survived by her sisters, Nancy Hynes, Rita Sullivan, Sr. Patricia Lardner, OP and several nieces and nephews. Sister was predeceased by her sister Catherine Waters.

Wake, Wednesday, May 22 from 3-8pm Huston Room of Saint Dominic's Convent; Mass of Christian Burial and Interment, Thursday, May 23 at 10:30 am Main Chapel of the Sisters of Saint Dominic 496 Western Highway, Blauvelt, NY 10913.

I met Tecie when I was a student brother in Berkeley. She was on sabbatical and she was a joy, funny, spiritually alive and great to be around. Years later she came to our priory in Irving, TX and she told me 'John you can take the girl out of New York,but you can't take New York out of the girl.' She went back to N.Y. And, from another fellow Jeanite, I remember Tecie as a fun-loving girl with a gleam in her eye! I wish I had gotten to know her better. My sincerest sympathy to her family and friends, but, especially after reading earlier comments, we can rest assured that she is now where we all one day hope to be.

So sad to hear the news of the passing of my fellow Jeanite. I remember her as a kind and gentle person even back in our teenage years in high school. Our prayers are with Patricia and all her family! May God surround them with His Love and Compassion.

I had the pleasure and privilege of working with this great woman twice in my life. The two years of my cadet career she was a constant, reassuring, and yes, INDOMITABLE presence. When I returned later as the Organist Choirmaster at Holy Trinity, I don't mind saying I couldn't have done anything without her. What guts, what gumption, what moxie, what drive, and all of it evidence of the great love that permeated every fiber of her being. I consider myself to be one of the luckiest people on the planet for having known her.

The Manhattan College alumni community shares the grief, and is now praying for our fellow alumni and the family at this time. The Alumni Office has been informed. As well as the Jasper Jottings community that I personally can reach. We are all a little poorer now. "No man is an island, entire of itself ... any man's death diminishes me". My cousin, Tecie,has been an inspiration to me.She was both a very strong and very gentle woman.She was 11 years old on her first trip to Ireland and her last was to celebrate my mother's 90th birthday. It was a great joy to spend time with her in New York about this time last year,the lovely boat trip around Manhatten that she treated me and my sister to with Ginny and Father Tom. She was full of a real awareness of the issues affecting the majority of people localy and globably poverty ,injustice and inequality,war, and worked tirelessly to end this May she rest in peace.Go ndeanai Dia trocaire ar a n-anam.

Woke up to see the sad news on my phone about Tecie, but the first thought of remembrance I had was her smile and her joy that just enveloped all of us who were blest to know her, so as we are diminished by her passing, we are enriched by her presence among us. We give thanks for the gift of Sr. Tecie Lardner O.P. and try to honor her life by continuing to live a joyful life in the Lord so that everyone we touch as she did will know the love and joy of Jesus Christ
