Thomas McLinskey Obituary

McLinskey, Thomas

Thomas James Jerome McLinskey died peacefully at Nyack Hospital surrounded by his family on May 24, 2012. One of six children, he was born in the Bronx on December 1, 1925 to James and Anna (Folliard) McLinskey. He grew up in the Bronx where he attended St. Jerome's Grammar School, St. Ann's Academy, and Manhattan College. He was a dedicated son who tirelessly helped his parents in their family grocery store. He had a lifelong love of sports, music, his Irish heritage, and his Catholic faith.

He bravely served in United States Navy as a Signalman on the USS YMS 389 in the Philippines and Okinawa campaigns from 1944 to 1945. When he returned, he completed his degree at Manhattan College and became a police officer in the NYPD in March 1950 and was soon promoted to First Grade Detective. Retiring in 1983 after thirty-three years, he loved his job, the men he worked with, and the opportunity to serve the people of New York City.

Tom married the love of his life, Marie Shaughnessy, on April 16, 1955, and recently celebrated 57 years of marriage. A true family man, he moved with his wife and his daughters from the Bronx to Pearl River in 1961 and became a parishioner of St. Margaret of Antioch Church in Pearl River. Tom was a devoted and loving husband to Marie and meant the world to his daughters and their families. Known for his cheerful, generous nature, great integrity, and beautiful smile, Tom was also a loyal friend, uncle, and mentor to many.

Thomas is survived by his wife, Marie, and his daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and William Dougherty, Eileen and Darren Shepard, Sheila and Gregory Golden, and Colleen and Patrick Higgins, and his thirteen grandchildren, Clare, Maureen, and Kathleen Dougherty, Kate, Dylan, and Andrew Shepard, Conor, Taylor, and Reilly Golden, and Thomas, Liam, Brendan, and Erin Higgins.

Thomas is also survived by his siblings and their spouses, John and Kathy McLinskey, Terence and Dorsey McLinskey, and Veronica McLinskey. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Jack and Arlene Shaughnessy, and his loving sister-in-law, Eileen Fleming. He is predeceased by his parents, his sister Eileen and Jim Larkin, his brother James, his brother-in-law Denis Fleming and mother-in-law, Katherine Shaughnessy. He will be missed and fondly remembered by all of his many nieces, nephews, neighbors, and friends.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, May 27 from 7-9 pm and Monday, May 28 from 3-5 pm and 7-9 pm at Wyman-Fisher Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Tuesday, May 29, 2012 at St. Margaret of Antioch Church, 115 West Central Ave, Pearl River, NY 10965. Burial will follow at Cemetery of the Ascension, 650 Saddle River Road, Airmont, New York 10952.

The Manhattan College alumni community shares the grief, and is now praying for our fellow alumni and the family at this time. The Alumni Office has been informed. As well as the Jasper Jottings community that I personally can reach. We are all a little poorer now. "No man is an island, entire of itself ... any man's death diminishes me". We are sorry for your loss.
