VICTOR DIAZ Obituary

Victor Diaz of Yonkers died on Tuesday, June 5, 2007 at age 59. Born on May 9, 1948 to Jose and Mercedes (Rios) Diaz in Santurce, Puerto Rico. He has been a Yonkers resident for 30 years, his father, Jose is living in Yonkers. Mr. Diaz was a utility man for Verizon for over 35 years. He served his country in the Army during the Vietnam War. He was a parishioner of St. Anthony and formerly of St. Joseph. In 1996, he single handedly saved 12 people in a burning building in Harlem. He received many awards including Thomas N. Vale Award and the Caring New Yorker Award from the State Attorney General. A Humanitarian Award has been named for him in New York for anyone showing Heroism: the Victor Diaz Award. He was the neighborhood auto mechanic and handyman. He was also an avid fan of motorcycles and liked to ride as often as he could. Victor is survived by his wife, Lucy (Figueroa) of Yonkers and his six children, Dionne Myhre of Virginia Beach, Victor Diaz, Jr. of Tampa; Gisela Harper of Orlando; Brian Diaz, Nicole Diaz and Denys Dias, all of Yonkers and eight grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Hector Diaz of the Bronx and his sister, Margaritta Sanchez of Yonkers. He was predeceased by his mother, Mercedes in 2001 and two brothers, Carlos in 1992 and Manuel in 1999. Visiting hours will be at the Whalen and Ball Funeral Home on Thursday, from 2-4 and 7-9 pm.
