WELLES CROWTHER Obituary

Welles Remy Crowther, 24 of Upper Nyack, NY is missing and unaccounted for in the World Trade Center tragedy of September 11, 2001. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs Jefferson Crowther, of Upper Nyack, and the grandson of the late Bosley Crowther, who was for many years the motion picture critic for The New York Times. Mr. Crowther was an equities trader with Sandler O'Neill & Partners, L.P. in New York City. He was a member of Empire Hook & Ladder Co. #1, a volunteer fire company in Upper Nyack, and a communicant at Grace Episcopal Church in Nyack. He attended Nyack High School, where he was an outstanding ice hockey and Lacrosse player. He then was a four year varsity Lacrosse player at Boston College, from which he graduated in 1999 with a degree in economics. He is survived by his parents, of Upper Nyack; his maternal grandparents, Dr. and Mrs. Frank J. Remy, Jr. of Scarsdale, New York: and two sisters Honor Elizabeth Bosley Crowther and Paige Hope Crowther, both of the home. There will be a liturgy of thanksgiving for the life and witness of Mr. Crowther at Grace Episcopal Church, 130 First Avenue, Nyack, New York at 2:00PM on Saturday, September 29, 2001. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that contributions be made to the Welles Remy Crowther Charitable Trust, c/o F. Bosley Crowther 3rd, Esq., P.O. Box 308, Palmyra, VA. 22963.

After all these years I just read the story of Welles' bravery and kindness on 9/11. I was so touched by his courage "under fire". Actual horrible fire! When I get to heaven someday I will look for him and give him a big hug. I expect there will be one heck of a line. I hope he's wearing that red bandana!

As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends. Grief can be so hard, but our special memories help us cope. Remembering you and your loved one today and always. God bless.

Hi my name is Josh and I am a Sophomore at Shanley High School. I have been learning about 9/11 in my religion class and we watched a video about Welles Crowther. I thought that it was very brave and courageous that he went looking for people to rescue instead of saving himself. I want you to know that we are not forgetting your loved one and are very sad for your loss.
