On Tuesday, February 12, 2008, Evans Edward Sechrest, brother, uncle and friend to many, passed away suddenly at the age of 76.
A native of Lompoc, CA, Evans was born August 12, 1931 to Evans and Adelaide Sechrest. The oldest of four siblings, he is fondly remembered by his brother and sisters as a person who loved life, reading and enjoyed keeping in touch with family and friends.
Evans grew up in Lompoc and graduated from Lompoc Union High in 1950. During his high school years, he worked for Hobbs Brothers as a buyer/salesman. He left Hobbs Brothers in 1951 to join the USAF where he served our country until he was honorably discharged January 10, 1955. During his four years in the USAF, he achieved the rank of E4 and earned several honors including the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. As a crewmember on the B36, Evans had the responsibility for the operation of the K system guidance. He became a member of an elite group of airman assigned to this aircraft. He loved to travel and his military training provided him with the opportunity to travel to several locations throughout the U.S.
Following the service in the USAF, Evans moved to southern California, eventually making his home in Venice. He worked as an engineer with Singer/Kearfott Company, a Division of General Precision, Inc. and Summers Gyroscope. The years following, he entered into a business relationship with Genuine Door and started the LPC Sash Company. His business savvy also included owning and managing several properties in the Los Angeles area.
Evans was kind hearted and a genuine lifetime friend to everyone. He had a remarkable memory and could recall a name, place, or time while talking about his travels and experiences.
Evans will be lovingly remembered by his sister Neva Jean Smith, Danny and children Stacey Foss (James) and Lisa Reese; his brother Arlen Sechrest, Lyla and children Cindy Simon (Clay), Todd Sechrest (Dawn), and Lyle Sechrest (Luda); his sister Melinda Bell (Gary) and children Tami Liljebeck (Todd) and Trisha Elsasser (Jeff); cousins Lyle Allen Sechrest (Sally) and Steve Wilson (Nancy). Evans will also live in the memory of his seven great-nieces, four great-great nieces, nine great-nephews, and close friend and business associate Pat Bent, as well as friend Michael Gatica. Evans was preceded in death by his parents Evans and Adelaide Sechrest.
A graveside service will be held at the Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery on Wednesday, February 27, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Ian Patrick Bent officiating.
