Joyce Copas Obituary
1929-2007
Joyce Copas of Santa Maria, CA passed away peacefully in a local hospital on February l8, 2007. She was born on February 28, 1929 in Kankakee, Illinois to Ruby and Harris Handorf. Joyce grew up on the Kankakee River in Hawkins Grove, attended local schools and graduated from Kankakee High School in l947. She married her husband, Paul Copas of Kankakee, Illinois in October 1948 at Asbury Methodist Church. They had 57 years of Happiness together raising their family, traveling and being together.
As a young adult, Joyce worked in the local Kresge in Illinois. In 1952, Joyce & Paul moved to the Southern California and was a homemaker for many years, later moving to the Lompoc and Santa Maria valleys. After moving to Lompoc, CA in 1961, she worked for JC Penney Co, helping to open the new store in Lompoc. Later moving to Santa Maria in 1968 and she returned to JC Penney Co in Santa Maria, retiring with over 25 years of service. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, serving in various capacities of United Methodist Women and on Social Concerns, serving the meals at the Good Samaritan Shelter.
In her retirement, she took up painting, working with the Lions and Lioness clubs, dedicating her time to assisting children with eye exams in local school, serving Meals on Wheels along side her husband in the Orcutt area. With her love of nature and the outdoors, brought many wonderful trips, camping with friends and family and Good Sam Camping group.
She is survived by son; Michael Copas and his wife, Mary Copas; her daughter, Cynthia Spears and her husband Michael Spears, her grandchildren; Catherine & Bill Johnson, Jennifer & Aaron Cardoza, Kimberly Spears, Gerald & Denise Wier, Kenneth & Mary Wier, Kevin Spears, Ronald & Barbara Wier, and twelve great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband Paul E Copas and her infant son Robert Copas.
A Celebration of Joyce's Life will be held Thursday, February 22, 2007 at 10:00 am at the First Untied Methodist Church, 311 S Broadway in Santa Maria.
Contributions may be made in memory of Joyce to the First United Methodist Church, 311 So. Broadway, Santa Maria, California.

To the family of Joyce,
Joyce and Paul were long time friends of my parents, John and Madge Brockhaus. Many a nights while I was in High School my parents and yours would come home from bowling and play cards in our kitchen. I would fall asleep in my room to their laughter. They had lots of fun together. I know my Dad and your Dad, Paul were right there in Heaven to greet Joyce.
