Roy G. Wornom, Jr., a longtime resident of Lompoc passed away on December 19, 2024, while living in Hillsboro, OR, a suburb of Portland. He was 97 years young.
Roy was born in Phoenix, AZ, on July 25, 1927. He grew up in Muncie, Indiana and moved to San Luis Obispo, CA in 1941. He graduated from San Luis Obispo High School in 1944. Before being drafted into the Army, he worked as a carpenter and cabinet maker in San Luis Obispo. He went on to serve in the Army as an Electronics Specialist during the Korean Conflict. Upon his return from Korea, he attended Cal Poly San Luis and graduated in June of 1958 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering.
From December 1958 until October 1975, he worked for Lockheed Missile and Space at Vandenberg Air Force Base. He lived with his family in Mission Hills. In October 1975, he moved, with his family, to Bremerton, WA, where he worked for Lockheed Missile and Space at Bangor Nuclear Submarine Base until his retirement in 1986.
In retirement, he spent winters in Yuma, AZ and summers in Oregon, or traveling across the country in his fifth-wheel.
In 1962, while living in Mission Hills, Roy built a 30 trimaran sailboat in his backyard. He was the talk of the neighborhood! He used cranes and flatbed trucks to haul the nearly finished sailboat to the boatyard in Santa Barbara. When finished, he named the boat after his wife, Anona and he and his family spent many fun times sailing to the channel islands.
Roy enjoyed building, camping, fishing, and motorcycles.
Roy is preceded in death by his parents, Roy G. Wornom, Sr., Nettie Wornom, his beloved daughter and son, Peggy (1976) and Jeff (1979), his sister, Linda Ann Wornom (McCann) (1982) and his wife, Anona (Noni) Wornom (2005).
He is survived by his daughter Nita, his son Doug, his beloved granddaughters, Rachel Lee and her husband Geo and Corinne Williams. He is also survived by his beloved great grandsons, Julian and Benett Lee and his nieces, Lori Cummings (McCann), Kira Cummings, Audrey Cummings, and Adrienne Cummings, and good family friend Bryan McBride and his family, all of whom he admired and loved.
No service is planned. Roy was cremated and his wish is to have his ashes scattered on Santa Cruz Island.
