Alice Lynn Obituary
Alice Katherine (Hall) Lynn, 82, of Ashburn, Virginia, peacefully passed away on September 16, 2025. As usual, she had a book in her hand and another waiting on her nightstand.
Born in Schenectady, New York, Alice was the daughter of Colonel Frederick B. Hall Jr. and Almira (Russ) Hall. As a military child, she traveled the world and held, with her brother, the unique distinction of being the first American dependents on the island of Okinawa, Japan following World War II-a fact she would share with characteristic pride and a twinkle in her eye.
Alice graduated from the College of William and Mary in 1964 with a degree in English Literature, where she was a proud member of Kappa Alpha Theta and played women's field hockey with the same determination she later brought to her Bridge games. She remained in Virginia for the rest of her life, making it her beloved home.
A teacher at heart and by profession, Alice dedicated her career to educating middle and high school students in English and French until her retirement in 1999. Upon retiring, she joyfully embraced her most cherished role as "Mimi Cookie" and "Oma." She became the family's enthusiastic cheerleader. She could be found in bleachers across Virginia cheering on hockey, football, and lacrosse games, proudly supporting the Redskins, and accompanying Cub and Boy Scout adventures. Her granddaughter re-introduced her to world travel in her later years, and Alice embraced each journey with the curiosity of a lifelong learner.
Alice was a voracious reader who treated sleep as merely an interruption to her literary pursuits, often reading through the night and requiring strategic afternoon naps. She was an active participant in multiple book clubs-sometimes filling multiple days of the week because, as she would say, there were simply too many good books and not enough time. Her love of Bridge was legendary, whether played between fishing expeditions with family, during sorority reunions, or in spirited games with friends at Ashby Ponds, where she spent her final four happy years.
A devoted student of the Bible, and lover of poetry and art, Alice found particular joy in reciting French poems with her father at family dinners-a tradition that brought literature to life around their table.
Alice was predeceased by her beloved parents, Colonel Frederick B. Hall Jr. and Almira (Russ) Hall; and her brothers, Jeffrey Hall and Frederic B. Hall III. She is survived by her sister, Katherine Bucklin; her sister-in-law, Eleanor Hall (married to Frederic); and numerous nieces and nephews. She leaves her greatest joys, her children: Nicole Bradley (Kerry), Michael Horne (Sanja), and Karen Oktavec; and with greatest pride, her grandchildren: Alexander Bradley (25), Christopher Bradley (23), Stella Horne (19), and Rhys Oktavec (20), each of whom knew they had a grandmother who would learn to love whatever they loved.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Tuesday, October 7th at Colonial Funeral Home of Leesburg, Virginia. A Communion service, celebrating Alice's remarkable life, will be held at 3:00 PM on Wednesday, October 8th at St. James' Episcopal Church in Leesburg, where she was a faithful member and Tuesday volunteer.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes with the Faustman Lab or your local library, as Alice would approve of any effort to put more books into the world. Alice Katherine (nee Hall) Lynn
