Ana Abendschein Obituary
Born in Guatemala City, Guatemala, on February 4, 1941 she was the eldest daughter of Tomas Poduje Vlastelica of Croatia, and Maria Celica Carrasco Lozada of Mexico. Her father Tomas was employed by United Fruit. She grew up with her parents and her brother Tomas and sister Elizabeth on a coffee plantation in a mountainous region in western Guatemala. After graduating high school in Guatemala, she moved to the United States to attend UCLA where she earned her Bachelor's degree in Journalism. Upon graduating, she accepted a position at the Inter-American Development Bank in Washington D.C.
Mrs. Abendschein was a loving wife for over 50 years to husband Dr. Walter Abendschein, a Navy veteran and orthopedic surgeon at Sibley Memorial Hospital, whom she supported in his medical practice, business endeavors, and multiple hobbies and with whom she traveled the world. They resided in Washington, DC until retiring to Middleburg in x.
She was a wonderful mother to her children, Kurt, a Marine Corps veteran and Karl, an export controls attorney. She was a devoted grandmother to her grandchildren through Karl, Philip and Theodora, of New York City. She was warm and welcoming, was a foodie before it was a thing, and frequently hosted friends and relatives at her home. She had an adventurous spirit, a fantastic smile, and humor and charm to spare. Her family will miss her immensely.
Mrs. Abendschein is survived by her son Kurt of Middleburg, Virginia. Her son, Karl Abendschein, and her husband, Dr. Walter "Bud" Abendschein predeceased her in 2015 and 2016, respectively. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Philip and Theodora, her daughter in law, Tatiana Abendschein, Karl's wife, and her daughter in law, Sheila Abendschein, Kurt's wife. Her extended family also includes Edelmira Carvajal, her son and his wife, Jorge and Danielle, and their two children Benjamin and Bianca, of Marshall, Virginia.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, April 12th, at 11 am at The Emanuel Episcopal Church Cemetery in Middleburg, VA.
