Anne Lackman Obituary
Anne Clarke Lanahan Lackman, beloved mother, artist, gardener, and community leader, passed away peacefully at the age of 94 on July 11, 2025. Born on April 26, 1931, Anne was the daughter of an Army officer. She spent her early years moving from base to duty station, including three years in France and Germany after WWII-a rhythm of movement and resilience that would shape the rest of her life. A gifted artist from a young age, she studied at Pratt Institute in New York City, where her creativity flourished. On November 20, 1954, she married William F. Lackman Jr. in Washington, D.C., beginning a partnership grounded in love, adventure, and children. As an Army wife, Anne continued the peripatetic life of her youth, raising seven children with grace and ingenuity through multiple moves to numerous locations. In 1974, Anne and Bill moved the family to Middleburg, Virginia, where Anne became a vibrant fixture in the town's life. She was the skilled hand behind most of the hand-painted signs adorning local businesses, private estates, and farms-each stroke of her brush was a signature of care and charm that helped define the town's aesthetic character. Her deep love for the community culminated in her service as Mayor of Middleburg, where she led with a blend of practicality, warmth, and tenacity. Above all, Anne was a devoted mother. Her yellow legal pads-used religiously to draft daily chore lists-were legendary among her children. Organized, energetic, and always with a to-do list in hand, Anne instilled a sense of purpose and pride in hard work, even in the most mundane of tasks. She leaves behind a legacy of creativity, civic engagement, and deep familial love. Anne will be remembered for her unshakable spirit, her captivating storytelling, her waggish sense of humor, her eye for detail, her joyful work ethic, and the way she made everywhere she lived feel like home. Anne was preceded in death by her parents, General Francis H. Lanahan and Mary Dorothy Clarke Lanahan; her husband, William F. Lackman Jr.; and her oldest daughter, Carey Anne Lackman Slease (Terry). Her remaining children survive her, Mary Michaela Murray (David), William F. Lackman, III (Betty), Francis X. Lackman (Kate), Anne L. Foky (David), Julia P. Glowacki (Joseph), Paul M. Lackman, 13 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and all who were lucky enough to be loved by her. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you plant something beautiful in her memory-or pick up a yellow legal pad and make a list. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Stephen the Martyr Catholic Church in Middleburg, VA, on Thursday, July 17, 2025, at 11:00 am. A reception following the burial will be held at the Middleburg Tennis Club. Anne Clarke (nee Lanahan) Lackman
