Elizabeth Sutherland Obituary
She was born September 20, 1923 in Hastings on the Hudson, New York, the daughter of late Joseph Hormidas Bouffard and Margaret Alexia Hogan Bouffard.
She married William Chapman and had a son, Robert and daughter, Debby, and after only six years of a loving and fun-filled marriage, cancer left her a widow. Not afraid of challenges, she went to work for Prudential Insurance and was soon promoted to Office Manager in the Trenton, NJ office. She worked full time and was a single mom until Robert and Debby were out of high school. Then she married George Sutherland but again was a widow after only 4 years of fun times. After almost 30 years at Prudential, she retired at age 62 to follow her children and grandchildren to Leesburg, Va.
Never one to sit idle, Betty had numerous part time jobs as well as strongly supporting St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church. As an usher for many years, churchgoers were always greeted by her smile and probably a hug. She went to Mayo Dentistry as a temporary hire to assist with the transition from manual to computer records. Her temporary status turned into 18 years of full-time employment. She finally retired for good at the young age of 80.
She is survived by her daughter, Deborah Elizabeth Goolsby and husband, Doug of Round Hill, VA; son, Robert Chapman and wife Carol of Leesburg, VA; and stepdaughter, Cathy Wood of San Antonio, TX; seven grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren. She is the last member of her immediate family.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, 27 May at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Purcellville, Virginia with Father Gould officiating. Burial will follow in Cool Spring Natural Cemetery, Berryville, Virginia.
Arrangements are by Enders & Shirley Funeral Home, Berryville, Virginia.
