Kathryn McSweeney Obituary

Kit McSweeney

Kathryn(Kit) Rogers McSweeney (nee MacCarteney), 83, passed away peacefully at home on August 17, 2025, in Warrenton, Virginia.

Kit was born on November 13, 1941, in New York City, NY. She grew up in Huntington, Long Island, before moving to Washington, D.C. She attended St. George's School in Montreux, Switzerland for two years and graduated from Holton-Arms School in Bethesda, Maryland, and Smith College.

After college she worked at Pan American Airways as a Reservations Agent before she and her other PanAm colleagues started Loudoun Travel in Leesburg, Virginia. It was at PanAm that she met her beloved late husband, John McSweeney. She and John loved to travel, golden retrievers, Ireland, and were ardent Washington Redskins fans.

Though she never had kids of her own, she was a devoted Aunt and Stepmom. She loved to share in the latest Redskins game with her nephew. Once a year while her niece was growing up, she would take her shopping for her birthday. Later in life, her stepson was there to take care of her.

Kit is survived by her sister, Mimi Strassner (Ken); her niece Jennie Wilson (Jarad); her nephew Allen Strassner; her great nephew Colin Wilson; her great niece Emma Wilson; and her stepsons Jim McSweeney and his golden retriever, Stewart; and Michael McSweeney(Patty).

Kit will be remembered in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. A celebration of Kit's life will be held sometime in the Spring.
