Sharon Lynne Dalton (nee Josephson) was born March 29, 1938 and died August 21, 2025 at the age of 87. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, daughter, and cousin, as well as a pillar in the community as a teacher for more than 30 years. Sharon was born in Philadelphia, PA and raised in Bethesda, MD. After marrying Glen P. Dalton Jr. in 1961, they moved to Sterling Park, VA in Loudoun County, and later to Hamilton, VA. Sharon settled in Leesburg in 1981, and she lived in Leesburg for the rest of her life.
Sharon was love personified. She built her life around the ideals of kindness and service to others. She was a teacher in Loudoun County from 1969 until 2003, when she retired from Loudoun County Public Schools. While she got her start at a private kindergarten, the majority of her 34 years in education were spent at Hamilton Elementary School, where she taught first, second, and third grades over the years. Additionally, she worked at Kmart in Leesburg and, later, at Kohl's in Leesburg parttime for a number of years, where she always enjoyed running into former students and their families.
Sharon loved her family and her friends, and enjoyed both local activities (especially bridge and Rummikub) and big trips with the Senior Center and luncheons with the Retired Teachers Association for a number of years after retirement. She created networks of community, which included being on the Women's Board that advocated for and contributed to the founding of the Loudoun County Public Library system. She loved spending time with family and friends, playing card games, reading and watching court dramas and mysteries, and enjoying a good cocktail with loved ones.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Alice Spjut-Josephson and Herbert Josephson, her ex-husband, Glen Dalton Jr, and her daughter, Traci Dalton. She is survived by many family members, including her daughter Terri Galvin (Jim), grandchildren Paige, Cortni (and great-grandson Antwan "Trey" McDowell), Glen Reitz, and Bob and Niki Galvin, as well as a cousin, Charles "Chuck" Josephson.
A funeral service will be held at Harmony United Methodist Church in Hamilton, VA on Friday, August 29, 2025 at 11:00 am, with burial at Lakeview Cemetery immediately following. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Loudoun Education Foundation (
loudouneducationfoundation.org) and/or Trey's college fund (contact family for details). Sharon Lynne (nee Josephson) Dalton
