William Boswell Hanes

1941 - 2023

William Boswell Hanes passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on February 23, 2023, in Leesburg, VA, at 81.

Bill was born on July 22, 1941, in Washington, D.C., to parents Stanley Bartlett Hanes, Jr. and Helen Crippen Hanes. He grew up in Herndon, Virginia, and graduated from Herndon High School in 1959. He attended Hampden Sydney College, earned his B.S. in 1965, and earned his J.D. from the University of Richmond Law School in 1968.

Bill practiced law for many years with the law firm of Hanes, Sevila, Saunders & McCahill in Leesburg, founded in 1974. He was named Commissioner of Accounts for the Circuit Court of Loudoun County in 1980. In 2008, Bill started a law firm, Hanes & Dickerson, with his stepdaughter, Mindy, where he practiced until he retired in 2011.

In 2012, Bill and Carol retired and moved to a beautiful home on the Great Wicomico River in Wicomico Church, VA.

Bill is predeceased by his wife, Carol Crouch Hanes, who passed away on February 13, 2023, in Leesburg, VA. He is also predeceased by his parents and brother, Thom Hanes, of Herndon, VA. He is survived by his twin brother Robert Hanes; his daughters Cary Lee Hanes, Cameron Hanes, and Mindy Hetzel Hartman; his niece Ashley Hanes; his nephews Chris Hanes, and Dana Hanes; and his grandchildren, Carter Gibson-Hanes, Gracie Gibson-Hanes, Gray Hetzel, Becks Hetzel, Jack Hartman, and Charlotte Hartman.

A memorial service will be held at the Loudoun Funeral Chapel on Sunday, March 5, with visitation at 2 pm and service at 3 pm.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations made be made to the American Cancer Society.
