Charles Lucas Obituary

LUCAS, CHARLES DOYLE "C. D./LUKE", JR., C.D. /Luke, teed off with St. Peter on Sunday, September 29, 2013 two days before his 87th birthday, and, as he did with life, hit it long and right down the middle of the fairway.

He earned the love and respect of his family and others by demonstrating high standards of integrity, hard work and service. C.D. was born on October 1, 1926, in Constantine, KY.

He was preceded in death by: his beloved and devoted wife of 56 years, Jane Basham Lucas; his parents, Charlie Doyle Sr., and Ressie Ann (Buckler); brother, Calvin; sisters, Lee Vasti and Lillian; and niece, Connie Ross. He is survived by: his daughter, Vicki Lucas Baker Cunningham (Charles Jr.), Louisville; son, Michael T. Lucas (Lisa), St. Johns, FL; granddaughters, Kathryn Baker, Las Vegas, NV, and Meredith Cunningham, Louisville; grandson, Charles Michael Cunningham, Louisville; step-grandsons, Bryan Warren (Mary), Chicago, IL, and Christopher Warren, Jacksonville, FL; sister, Vinnie Glasscock, Hardinsburg, KY; sister-in-law, Natalie Lucas, Louisville; seven nephews: Thomas Glasscock (Jo Ann), Leitchfield, KY; C. Edward Glasscock (Mary F.), Louisville; Layman Lucas (Jacquie), Garfield, KY; David Basham, New York, NY; Larry Glasscock (Rebecca), Hardinsburg, KY; Paul Basham (Nancy), Jacksonville, FL; and Todd Glasscock, Hardinsburg, KY; and nieces Kathryn Elder (Chad), Jacksonville, FL, and Karen Hendricks (David), Jacksonville, FL.

C. D. rose to the rank of Major in the Air Force Reserve after serving on active duty in-theater during the Korean conflict and a number of years with the Ky Air National Guard.

C.D. began his business career at the age of 15 on the family farm and at the family business, C. D. Lucas & Sons Truck, Auto & Equipment. After selling his interest in the operations, he worked for 30 years at the Federal Land Bank/Farm Credit Bank, becoming Senior Executive Vice President & Secretary. He retired in 1985, having helped manage the growth of the Bank into Kentucky's largest financial institution with nearly $8 billion in assets. After retirement he held a commercial real estate license, worked as a consultant, mentor, financial planner, and venture capitalist. He served on the board of several local businesses including Cardinal Aluminum and Kentucky Medical Insurance Company. Various governors appointed him to a number of boards including the: Kentucky Council of Cooperatives, Council on Agriculture, and Council on Economic Development.

C.D. graduated from UK in 1952 (Phi Kappa Tau fraternity) with a degree which combined two of his abiding interests -- agricultural economics. He was a lifelong supporter of the university, especially the College of Agriculture. This culminated in being named Distinguished Alumnus in 1989 and inducted in the Scoville Society in 1988. His organizational and fiscal skills also supported the United Way, Boy Scouts and other charities. He was Chairman Emeritus of the Parkinson's Support Center of Kentuckiana (PSCKY) where he had worked to assist others locally deal with the disease he himself fought for 14 years. PSCKY awarded him the "Time & Motion Award" in 2006.

C.D. was a long-standing member of Christ Church United Methodist (CCUM) and a charter member of Hunting Creek Country Club.

Michael, Lisa and Lucas family,

We want you all to know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. We pray that you will find peace and comfort in this time of grief. While I did not know your father well, knowing Michael tells me volumes about the type of man he had to be. Thank you for loving my sister and taking good care of her. We love and miss you, and are looking forward to being with you again soon.

Love, Eric, Pam, Summer, Brendan and Keegan

I had the honor of meeting C.D. many years ago as he was one of our clients at J.C.Bradford/PaineWebber and on occasions, saw him at Different Strokes Driving Range on River Road. A wonderful man who made a difference in others' lives. I'm glad our paths crossed. Your family will be in my prayers.
