Chava Bensinger Obituary

BENSINGER , CHAVA (POSNANSKI), beloved wife, mother and grandmother, passed away Saturday, January 5, 2013 at the age of 75.

She was born in Tel-Aviv, Israel, the only child of Avraham Posnanski and Sara Lerner. Her parents immigrated to Israel in the late 1920s, leaving behind family and friends in Poland, who would years later, be entirely wiped out during the Holocaust. Mrs. Bensinger completed her military service for the Israeli Defense Forces and later received a degree in Education from the Tel-Aviv Teachers College. She taught Hebrew and Jewish education in Israel, France and the United States. She also worked several years for the Israeli Foreign Service in Jerusalem and Holland, as well as for several, large Tel-Aviv hotels as a guest relations attaché.

Mrs. Bensinger's fluency in Hebrew, English, Spanish, French, German and Yiddish were of great help to her and her family during their world travels and 11 year residency in Managua, Nicaragua, Guatemala City, Guatemala and Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Her greatest joys were the company of her four grandchildren, the opportunity to sing as a member of the Adath Jeshurun Choir and the ability to follow and discuss politics. She was a member of Congregation Adath Jeshurun and the choir and the Catholic-Jewish Dialogue Group.

She is survived by her husband, Hans Bensinger; daughter, Karin Bensinger Appelbaum (Daniel) of Chicago, IL; four grandchildren, Nathan, Noa, Tess and Mabel Appelbaum of Chicago; a nephew, Dr. John Simon of Chevy Chase, MD; a niece, Irene Simon Friedman of Bogota, Colombia; and several Louisville cousins, including Margot Barr, Jeffrey Barr, Carl Bensinger, Sandra Barr Hammond (Mark) and Benjamin Schaffer (Marlene). The family would like to thank her caretaker, Catherine Marcum, and the staff at the Episcopal Church Home for the wonderful care they provided Mrs. Bensinger.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Herman Meyer & Son, 1338 Ellison Ave. with burial to follow in Adath Jeshurun Cemetery. Visitation: noon.

Expressions of sympathy may go to Alzheimer's Association, 6100 Dutchman's Lane, Louisville, KY 40205.
