Dave Peterson was an extraordinary next door neighbor. We all have many memories: Dave on a run in the park; Dave backing his red convertible out of the garage and waving as he passed by; talking to Dave and Rita when they sat on their porch of an evening; knowing it was truly springtime when Dave did the annual cleaning of the porch furniture; Dave trying to control the weeds in our shared chain link fence row (until we all gave up and took it down). There was nothing special in our day to day interactions, but it was a good feeling to know Dave (and Rita) were right next door if we needed anything. In fact, our family escape plan in the event of an emergency was to get to Dave and Rita´s house and wait there.
But beyond the daily rhythms, we had so many extraordinary interactions: Dave and Rita welcoming us to Eastern Parkway and being delighted children were moving next door; Dave not even getting angry when we had a row of his trees cut down because we thought they were on our property; Dave throwing a ball back and forth across the fence with the kids; Dave rescuing our howling cat from their roof in the middle of the night when we were out of town and returning it safely to our house; Dave coming to the back screen door to retrieve Aerie Claire (I´m sure I´m spelling that wrong) when she ran in our house after smelling bacon; and, of course, amazing Halloween and Christmas treats.
It was after our family moved from Eastern Parkway that we realized how incredibly blessed we were to have lived beside Dave and Rita. We missed them mightily.
Rita, Nate and Ellie, kids - we are thinking of you and sending our love. Peace be with you.
