Douglas Duncan Obituary

Duncan, Douglas M. "Dyno",

69, passed away on Friday, March 4, 2016, surrounded by his family.

Doug was born in Louisville, Kentucky, on December 24, 1946, to the late William M. Duncan, Jr., and Susan Douglas McClellen. After graduating from Butler High School in 1964, Doug worked until he was drafted by the United States Army in 1966. He spent most of his time in the military as a tank gunner, and he served proudly until 1968. Doug began his career as a railroad engineer for Norfolk Southern Railroad in 1969, where he fostered many friendships and built a solid reputation as one of their finest engineers until his retirement in 2006.

Doug is survived by his wife of 22 years, Linda Duncan; his daughters Michele Metcalfe (Thomas) and Tara McCarty (Benjamin); stepson Scott Dalton (Shelley); stepdaughter Amy Dane (Ryan); sister Deborah Duncan; nephew Stephen Duncan; grandchildren Zackery, Molly, Gavin, Tucker, Reese, Nola, Shyla, Adelaide, and Rafe; one aunt; several cousins; and a large number of friends.

Doug will be fondly remembered for his love of simple things in life: fixing up cars, driving his motorcycle and his hot rod, playing golf with his friends, watching UK basketball, listening to blues music, watching movies, dancing, and most of all, telling (and retelling) stories. He found great joy in spending time with his family. He was loved deeply and will be missed by all who were blessed to know him.

His funeral service will be at 1 pm on Tuesday, March 8, 2016 at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road, with burial to follow in Cave Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1-8 pm on Monday at Highlands.

My name is Tommy Scott and I was just informed of Dougs passing . I work at The Lyons Den and knew Doug for at least 40 years . I'm so sorry to have missed seeing his daughters and thank you for remembering me in your time of loss. I had an illness 2 years ago and Doug visited me . It meant a lot to me as did his friendship. We had a lot in common with our love of motorcycles , cars , Ky Basketball , and music. Please accept my heart felt sympathies and I'm so very sorry that I didn't see of his passing in the paper. What a shame that we don't take the time to tell our friends how much they mean to us like we do our families. Again , I'm so , so very sorry and if I can help in any way please let me know. RIP my dear friend Doug .

Mr. Duncan. We didn't even consider calling him by any other name. He was the guardian protector of his daughters and of our neighborhood. His stature along with a great presence that well demanded (respect) and when earned, always returned that same respect.
He was exemplary in every endevour, being his beautiful landscaping, custom cars, concern for his fellow workmen and most definitely his greatest love, Michelle and Tera.
Once over a game of billiards and on his Kentucky Blue table, we spent some time that day discussing everything from the Railroad, Pool and just looking me in the eye and insuring me that a man's value is measured not on what he owns or where he might come from, but on what he chooses to do with that. That's when I knew who he was and what integrity really meant. It's amazing that in a couple of hours how one person can make you realize that you can do just about anything with real commitment and (integrity). That lead to other conversations between us later. I will never forget those lessons and do still reflect on them now.

I will miss you Doug, we will all miss you. Thank You for taking the time to instill in me honor.

You are truly one of a kind!

Found memories of Doug protecting his beautiful daughters or at least making his presence known. Just going to knock at the door was terrifying. We were kids at the time and we knew better than to knock past dark. Once we grew up I was able to talk with Doug as an adult and realized he wasn't mean at all but really a great guy and father. He took pride in everything he did; His cars, yard, home, children, and occupation. When I think of Doug I think of a big guy with a great heart and a wonderful smile. I also think of his favorite past times; Movies, UK basketball, cars, and his awesome pool table. I'm thankful to have befriended Michele and Tara at such an early age. They are of course a reflection and part of this great guy. Thanks Doug May you rest in peace. Rick A. Wurzel
