Gene Holloway Obituary

HOLLOWAY, GENE COLEMAN, 84, of Louisville, passed away Wednesday August 15, 2012 at his home with his family by his side.

He was the founder and President of Holloway & Son Construction for over 70 years, a member of Middletown United Methodist Church, former Mayor of Middletown for 18 years and a member of Middletown Chamber of Commerce.

Gene was an avid traveler and the most generous of men, but one of his true loves was working. He especially loved his crane and when he was unable to climb up into the cab, he would be lifted by another piece of equipment to the cab.

Gene was preceded in death by his brother, Billy Holloway.

He is survived by his loving wife of 17 years, Shirley Jean Summers Holloway; daughter, Phyllis Bradbury; grandchildren, David Abbott (Gail) and Joe Abbott (Kim); great-grandchildren, David Coleman "Cole" , Rachel Diane, Ethan Joe and Austin Tommie Abbott, brothers, Bob Holloway, David Holloway (Henrida) and Shannon Holloway.

His funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 18, 2012 at Middletown United Methodist Church with burial at Resthaven Memorial Park to follow. Visitation will be 2 - 7 p.m. Friday, August 17, 2012 at the church.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to The St. Mary's Center of Middletown in lieu of flowers.

A very dear friend of my parents. When we would see them out to dinner after my Dad’s passing, he would tell me about playing marbles in the dirt with Dad when they were boys. They lived near each other out near Eastwood I believe. And he always asked about Mother. His kindness, continued friendship and stories meant so much to me. I have nothing but nice memories of him. Rest In Peace.

We are sorry for the loss of Gene. We hear he battled with his illness for the last few years, with his final year, the toughest. Much sympathy and prayers to all of the family. The obituary said it right. He loved to work, as I remember him growing up in the 1950's in Middletown. Both my parents, Frank (Boots) and Martha B Brinley Miller Wills worked with Holloway & Son Const. for years. It was a family company back then, and if you worked with them, you were family too. One measure of a successful life is the positive influence you have on others. Gene's positive influences far outnumbered the negative. He touched many lives. He was a success.
We know his recent suffering is done, and he is at rest....probably sitting on a dozer or crane building something for God.

Gene was a very intellegent man with a great amount of resources, (due to years of hard work), with no desire to flaunt either. He was witty with the ability to quickly win over anyone he talked to. He was the epitome of a gentleman and the most generous man I ever had the pleasure of knowing, what a loss to us all.
