Jim Syers Obituary

Syers, (continued),

Jim's outstanding leadership and abilities to instill teamwork and pride was known throughout the Postal Service. It was not unusual to see him in post offices large and small throughout the district. One of his biggest pleasures was to get 'out in the field' and talk with customers and employees who made the Postal Service look good.

Jim's love for his job was well known by his interactions and involvement with employees. His introductions of postal employees were always of 'those who work with me, not for me.' He firmly believed that he alone was not responsible for the accomplishments of the district; rather, everyone working together to get the job done was the reason for the consistent high marks for quality service.

Well known for leading by example, Jim was fair, compassionate and understanding. His expectations were that everyone, no matter what position they filled in life, would be treated with dignity and respect. These were attributes he displayed throughout his career and his lifetime, and he earned them in return from all those fortunate enough to meet and/or work with him. Jim's passions for his family and friends will be remembered and missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Sue (Mills) Syers, six daughters and five sons-in-law, Joyce Hayes, Jane (Tom) Hancock, Jamie Sue (Bryan) Bloomer, Janice (Jim) Leake, Jaqueline (Bob) Duncan and Johanna (Chip) Prins. He was preceded in death by his beloved son, John Douglas, his parents and a son-in law Ben Hayes. He was very proud of his 15 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be Sunday, from 2 - 4 p.m. (EST), at Milward Funeral Directors, 1509 Trent Blvd., Lexington, KY 40515. Funeral services will be held January 12, at 11 a.m. (CST), at Sturgis United Methodist Church, Sturgis. Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow the service at Pythian Ridge Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your charity of choice or the John D. Syers Scholarship Fund, K Fund, c/o John D. Syers Scholarship Fund, Joe Craft Center, 338 Lexington Ave., Lexington, KY 40506.
