Joseph Coogle Obituary

COOGLE, JOSEPH M. JR., 77, died August 9, 2010 in Annapolis, MD.

He was born in Louisville on January 13, 1933 to the late Joseph Moore Coogle Sr. and Dorothy Virginia Coogle, both deceased. Joe was known for his wit and wisdom, particularly by those closest to him.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Maryhelen; two daughters, Suzanne C. Smith and Virginia L. Coogle; three grandchildren, S. Cali Smith, Ryan D. Smith and Caleb Z. Coogle; and two sisters, Donna J. King and Margaret A. Lawson.

Joe Coogle attended the University of Louisville, earned his bachelor's from the University of Kentucky and his Master in Business Administration from the University of Chicago. He also served in the United States Army and trained as a radio transmitter. Although his passions were golf and sailing, Joe began a career in marketing at the Pillsbury Company and ended his professional career as executive vice president and a director of Ketchum Communications, Inc., a Pittsburgh-based international advertising, public relations and sales promotion agency. As retirement was an active verb for him, Joe taught undergraduate and graduate level classes at Robert Morris University, Duquesne University and the University of Maryland.

Visiting hours will be from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, August 13, 2010 at Pearson's Funeral Home, 149 Breckenridge Lane, St. Matthew's, Louisville. The funeral services are to be held at Third Lutheran Church in Louisville at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 14, 2010. A memorial service will be held at St. Martin's Lutheran Church in Annapolis, MD at a later date.

Memorial gifts may be made to Pressley Ridge (a non-profit organization that provides services to troubled children and families), Development Department, 5500 Corporate Drive, Suite 400, Pittsburgh, PA 15237.

Mary Helen and Family, please accept my sincere condolences. I only met Mr. Coogle about a year ago while visiting my Mom at Heritage Harbor. I got to know the family during those visits also. They were very loyal and dedicated to seeing that Mr. Coogle was treated with the utmost respect. Mr. C was so lucky to have such a wonderful family and no doubt in my mind they were lucky to have him for a husband, father and Grandfather. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.Hope our paths cross again. You folks were always so nice to me and my Mom.

My condolences to Joe's friends and family. I knew Joe from Ketchum and enjoyed those times when our paths crossed for business. He was a very gentlemanly fellow and I appreciated his gracious and genial style with all of our employees, no matter their position, when he visited our offices in San Francisco.

I remember when he would come to our office for meetings. He would make his way to the 4th floor boardroom only after stopping on each floor and greeting every staff member he encountered and inquiring about our wellbeing. That small gesture is still spoken of here when his name is mentioned. A small way but still one of the many ways he made a difference. Many blessing to his family at this time.
