Joseph Hascal Obituary

HASCAL, JOSEPH B., a former Louisvillian, died unexpectedly but peacefully Saturday, May 1, 2010 at his home in Parkland, FL.

Joseph was born April 5, 1924. Originally from Toledo, OH, he was the son of Jacob and Faiga Hascal, the second youngest of 11 children. Joe never met a stranger and always had a funny story to share.

Following graduation from high school, he enlisted in the service and served in the 3rd Army under General Patton. After the war, Joe began his career in men's clothing. In 1955, he bought his first store, Adam Hats, in Cincinnati, OH with his partner, Stan Gray. In 1956, they bought the Adam Hats store in Louisville, which Joe managed. They later changed the store names to House of Adam. Joe loved the clothing business and operated the store in downtown Louisville for nearly 40 years. Some of his many celebrity customers included Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, Cassius Clay/ Mohammed Ali and Sonny Liston. Joe was one of the rare men who love to shop, and his day wasn't complete without a visit to at least one retail establishment.

Joe married his first wife, Bettylou, in 1954. After moving to Louisville, he and his family were members of The Jewish Community Center and Temple Brith Shalom, Joe became a member of the Kentucky Colonels in 1963. Following Bettylou's death in 1986, Joe rededicated himself to his business. In 1992, he married Lolly Dobreff, Joe closed his store in the mid-1990s and retired to FL.

In 1993, Joe was predeceased by his son, Rick.

He is survived by his second wife, Lolly Hascal; children Pam (Richard) Levin of Louisville, Erica (Terry Gratz) Dobreff of Missouri, Denise Hauser of Florida, Kevin (Caren) Dobreff of Michigan; grandchildren Jessica (BJ) Flynn of Louisville, Kimberly (Kurt Pitzer) Levin of New York, Shannon Levin of Louisville, Erin Levin of Louisville, Hilary Hauser of Ohio, Dana Hauser of Florida and Nicholas Dobreff of Michigan; daughter- in-law, Karyn Hascal and grandson Erik Hascal of Louisville; and great-grandchildren, Avery and Beckett Flynn. He will also be missed by his brother, Albert Hascal of Washington.

A graveside service was held May 3, 2010 at the South Florida VA National Cemetery in Lake Worth, FL.

Elaine and I first met Joe and Betty at the Newport Beach Hotel Miami Florida in 1980. It was our first trip to the USA and we were a little in awe of everything. Joe and Betty took us under their wing and took us everywhere in the following week, they treated us like we were their family. We later met up with Joe and Lolly in 1992 whilst Joe was having radiation treatment in Sarasota, we were staying at Treasure Island just up the coast and we went to see them for a couple of hours and stayed three days. We went back again later in our vaction and stayed another couple of days. Since then we have visited them both in Sarasota, Delray Beach and Boca Raton and each time we were treated like family. Of course Joe and I always argued about who would pay the bill at the restaraunt, mainly because he always tried to insist we were his guests. We feel that we are so lucky to have met such a lovely man who we are proud to have been able to call our friend. We will miss him and the world will be a poorer place with his passing. May we pass on our condolances to Lolly and his family and friends. May we finish by saying Joe was a true gentleman.

Freindships that last a lifetime, not many people can claim that, but Joe, Sam Schwartz and my father had that kind of magical friendship. I am proud to have also developed that same friendship with Joe and Sam. Joe was very kind to our whole family. We spent many vacations in Louisville and then when they moved to Florida we visited there. Joe kept that wonderful friendship with my mother even after my father died. He was truly a MENSCH. I will miss him and send my deepest condolances to both families.
