Lela Higgins Obituary

HIGGINS, LELA N. , 90, of Louisville, passed away Monday, November 7, 2005, at her residence. She was a native of Fancy Farm, KY, and a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church. After graduating college she proudly served as one of the first female Marines in World War II. She is also listed on the Women In Military Service for America Memorial in Washington, DC. Lela was preceded in death by her husband, James Joseph Higgins. She is survived by six daughters, Anne H. Sandhu, Rose M. Greenwell,Rita Higgins-Myers (Edwin), Norma J. Middleton (Doug), Jean M. Higgins (Doug) and Cecilia A. Crawford (Samuel); one brother, Paul Neel; two sisters,Rita McPherson and Kathleen Siegel; six grandchildren, Kirin Sandhu-Leon (Jon), Nishaan Sandhu, James Greenwell (Donna), Rita Greenwell (Julie), Matthew Middleton and Ana Bailey; three great-grandchildren, Alan Greenwell, James Hargrove (Billie) and Caleb Beaven; one great-great-grandchild, Breahna Hargrove; and her faithful companion Cody. She is also survived by her caregivers, Jude Alvey, Debbie McKemy, Barbara Shipp and Tressie Black. Her funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Thomas More, 6105 S. Third St., with burial in Highland Memory Gardens. Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. Thursday at Nunnelley Funeral Home, 4327 Taylor Blvd. Expressions of sympathy may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Louisville.

Rose, I am sorry to hear of your loss, but I know that your Mother's illness has been difficult for all, and I pray that her passing brings peace to her, as well as to your family. I know that your mother was an incredible woman.
