Lieutenant Nettles Obituary

NETTLES, LIEUTENANT , 80, of Louisville, died Thursday, March 3, 2005, at Jewish Hospital. He was born April 29, 1924, in Clinton, LA. He was Kentucky's first black bank officer, a graduate from the School of Banking at University of Wisconsin, an Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War and an instructor at the Armored School at Fort Knox, where he was in charge of training officers in tank and artillery. He was deemed a Kentucky Colonel by former governor Louie B. Nunn. Mr. Nettles was a retired vice president of the former Fort Knox National Bank. He had extensive knowledge and experience in the field of banking and was a member of the First Congregational Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Lizzie Nettles; three daughters, Beverly and Diane Nettles both of Louisville and Lynda Lacey of Maryland; one granddaughter, Vanessa Morris of Massachusetts; and other close relatives and friends. His funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at his church, 3810 Garland Ave. Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Lebanon (KY) National Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon-1 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Arrangements by G.C. Williams Funeral Home.
