Louise Gans Obituary

GANS, LOUISE JONES, died Thursday night, January 12, 2006, at her home. She was born in 1903, at her parents' historic home (built in 1796) on their farm. In addition to being a devoted wife and mother, Louise loved horses and as a child won many ribbons at the State Fair. Her love of horses never ceased. She attended 84 Kentucky Derbys -- her first in 1916. She missed only one when she broke her hip in 1999, and then again in 2005, as her health began to fail. She was a graduate of Kentucky Home School, a former member of the Pendennis Club, and a life-long active member of First Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, George E. Gans; two sisters, Frances Jones Theobold and Sara Jones Dent; her brother, Scoggan Jones; and a nephew, Scoggan Jones Jr. She is survived by her daughter, Betty Gans Wemple of Naples, Florida; a son, George E. Gans III of Louisville; three grandchildren, Charles A. Brown of Santa Monica, California, and Kendall Gans Maurer and Alexander B. Gans of Louisville; nieces, Anne Boyd and Mary Katherine Boone of Louisville and Frances Whitman of Lexington, Kentucky; step-grand-children, Lisa Summers McNally of Louisville, and Wendy Wemple and Jenny Frazee of California. A private graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Cave Hill Cemetery. Visitation at the residence of her son, George E. Gans, 448 Lightfoot Road, Louisville, Kentucky, will be from 2 -7 on Sunday. Pearson's, 149 Breckenridge Lane, is in charge of arrangements. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the "Lost Boys from Sudan," Chase Bank, 3820 Brownsboro Road, Louisville, Kentucky 40207.

Mrs. Wemple, Charley, and Family,

I'm very saddened by the passing of Grandma Gans. She was a wonderful lady, fantastic ambassador for Kentucky and The Derby, and a beacon of light for the many descendants and friends who knew and loved her.

Charley, I know how much she meant to you, from all the wonderful stories you told of her over the years. Good friend, my thoughts are with you.

With sympathy, Jeff Swanson
