Lung Yam Obituary

YAM, LUNG TSIONG MD, FACP, an internationally known hematology and oncology specialist, died May 9, 2013, in Louisville, after an extended illness. He was 77 years old.

A prolific researcher and authority on blood diseases and diagnostic biomarkers, Dr. Yam's research and seminal studies helped establish tests for hairy cell leukemia and other blood disorders and cancers, many of which are now citation sources in the field of hematology/oncology. Although he had many medical achievements throughout his career, he was most fondly remembered not only for guiding medical students and assistants to become successful in medicine and science but also for his gentle, confident way with patients and their families. Lung T. Yam, MD was born in Canton, China and received his medical degree from the National Taiwan University in 1961. He served his internship at Cook County Hospital, residency at Mount Sinai Medical Hospital in Chicago, IL, and fellowship training at the New England Medical Center in Boston, MA. After working at the Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation in La Jolla, CA, Dr. Yam moved to Louisville in 1974; retiring as Professor of Medicine from Uof L and Chief of Hematology at the Robley Rex Louisville VA Hospital.

Dr. Yam is survived by his wife, Julia of Louisville; daughter Eva and son Asa, sisters Tse Mei and Kei Ming and brother Bob.

A memorial service will be held on June 13, 2013 at 3 p.m. at the University of Louisville Hospital Auditorium. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be sent to the James Graham Brown Cancer Center, 529 South Jackson Street, Louisville, KY 40202 for establishment of a L.T. Dr Yam left knowledge in so many ways. He explained to me if I cannot bring my knowledge to the point others cannot understand then it is no good. How true as I carried on in science to teach others.
Dr Yam was so kind and patient.
Thank you Dr Yam

My husband, Kent, & Dr Yan were classmates at Pui Ching School & Tai Da University in Taiwan.
We had getogether once or twice in CA decades ago. Kent thought of him so very highly... a gentleman, a scholar, a kind, sincere, dedicated person. I always looking for a chance to know him & his family a little more.
Before 60th Reunion/2014 of his Pui Ching Class, he left... that's sad. His classmates'll miss him so much.
Take good care, Mrs Yam.
