Martin Twist Obituary

TWIST, MARTIN RAY, 71, born to Ray and Edna (Beasley) Twist, April 7, 1943 in Louisville, KY, passed away February 23, 2014.

"The world just got a little less interesting" ~ W. Smith Martin danced to the beat of his own drum with great passion and love for life. He was never one to follow the path of others. Instead he was a constant seeker of adventure and created a life lacking boredom. He exposed the ones he loved to the finest things this world had to offer - time together. He was an entrepreneur, philanthropist, restaurateur, licensed pilot, sometime sinner and occasional saint. He was a loving fiancé, caring devoted father, and friend to many.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sandra Curry Twist; daughter, Tonjua Twist; mother, Edna Beasley; and step-father, Joe Beasley.

He is survived by his fiancé, Sarinprapa Teema; father, Ray Twist; half brother, Joerhea Beasley; step-sister, Dolores Zimmer; daughter, Tam Twist and her husband Todd Pilcher; three sons, Hunter, Tanner and Kristofer Twist; and grandchildren, Nathan Power, Ashley Twist, Cody Curry, Lindsay and Mark Brazil.

Visitation will begin at 5:30 p.m. Monday, March 3, 2014 at Ratterman Funeral Home, 3711 Lexington Road "in St. Matthews" with a celebration of Martin's life at 7:30 p.m.

Martin and I were class mates at Valley High School. I haven't seen Martin in years. But do remember the fun we had in school keeping the teachers on their toes. Rest in Peace old friend!

Martin, one in a million. Thank you for your friendship for 40 years. It was fun and interesting and profitable. Hopefully you are in Heaven, for the last month I felt God leading me to pray for your salvation and I did, see you heaven old Fried.

I remember lots of things we did together, but the one that really sticks out was the time we went through Oklahoma in the SUV, Martin want to stop in Tahlequah to see if his kin was buried, I said why do you think there might be, he said I am half Cherokee Indian, my grandfather is a full blood, a blue eyed Indian and he was a really good looking guy. To my surprise there were a lot of Villines buried in those Indian grave yards.

When we were classmates at Valley High School, Martin (Skip) Twist was everyone's friend. I had not seen him in over 50 years but often remembered the good times spent with Skip and our friends. I pray he found much happiness and peace in his life.

He earned the right to be called "Martin," but he will always be "Skip" in my mind. We were inseparable childhood friends. We played daily up and down Dixie Highway. We were good for at least one disruptive antic per day. He was a free spirit in his youth and obviously remained so all his life.

Tam we will forever remember how your father welcomed us into his house for a memorable Derby weekend and showing us around during Sherry's 60th birthday visit to Louisville. I know how hard it is loose a parent whom you love. Our prayers go out to you during this most difficult time. May you find comfort in knowing that we are here for you. Hugs for you and family. I remember your Dad starting his car with a remote in the early 80's on a very cold Kentucky morning.

Hugs and love for you and your Dad Tam and family.

My thoughts go out to Tam and Todd. Martin was indeed a rare person. His obituary was spot on and well done.

I worked with Martin a short time back in 1980. He was a man full of self confidence, vision, adventure, and a love for life. There was never a dull moment with Mr. Twist in the room. I'm sure his life was the stuff legends are made of. My deepest condolences to his family. I will never drive through Cave Hill without remembering the spirit that could erect such a monument to love. Rest in Peace.
