Paul Brown Obituary

Brown, Paul Gene Jr.,

7.14.49 - 1.29.15

Son of June E. Brown and Paul G. Brown

Husband of Frances Long Brown.

Paul graduated from Oldham County High School in 1967. He attended Western Kentucky University and the University of Louisville. In 1968 Paul enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was a tool & dye mould maker retiree from General Electric, who loved to work with his hands, and create a comfortable life for Frances and himself. He said that his step-father, who was a finish carpenter, showed Paul that anything could be made with imagination and a variety of materials. This and his career provided him with the skills and know-how "to make anything from a rubber ducky to a battleship, given the materials and tools."

Paul and Fran shared a love of music. He also loved to learn and to read. Paul wrote volumes of poetry for the love of his life, and wife, Frances.

From the Book of Frances:

Whilst we wait for

me to die

Please be beside me

and let us lie,

Together for a bit.

If you cannot wait for

that day

When I am gone

and far away

Do not let me know.

I do not wish for

you to be

A prisoner for

eternity,

But pretend you love me.

So whilst we wait for

me to die

Please lay beside me

and lie

For just a bit.

- Paul G Brown, Jr. (Shag), 1979

I knew Paul & Frannie for many years. He was a gentle giant, soft spoken man. She was the sweetest person you would ever know, she was lace. No matter what you think about right or wrong, they carefully thought this out. Frannie and I spoke of this very thing for about a year. Our husbands were the only ones we wanted to care for us or see our polio deformed bodies. To the "normal" people out there, next time you eat dinner and cannot cut up your salad think about her. Drop something on the floor and can't pick it up. Have you ever gone out and wondered how many steps will there be: how will I get out of the hair. Those that had the privilege to know them know what I speak. We would say that if our husbands went first, we were doing a Thelma and Louise. We knew our husbands were our lifelines. I will love them forevermore. Paul and Fran I will always LOVE you and am better for knowing you both.

One of the dearest men I've ever had the privilege to know... Paul and Frances were much more than my friends, they were my loving "brother" and "sister." I will miss them as much as I loved them.

New Paul for quite a few years and we had our differences but never could he not given reasoned and cogent responses for his views and ideas. He always earned my respect and admiration.

As I wrote on Frances page the Post Polio Group meetings were so much help for so many of us. Paul worked so hard at Frances side. They were a dynamic pair in fighting Post Polio. I'm glad they left this world together as they wished. RIP

While others sold coffee for profit, Paul's java efforts produced thousands for the Crusade for Children. While others competed for Lead-Man pay, Paul passed on what was rightfully his. He took on the most difficult job assignments and would gladly help - but only if you asked. His tools were your tools. His music was your music. …Very quietly among the best, both as a craftsman and as a person.
