Philetus Barber Obituary

SPRINGFIELD BARBER, PHILETUS SWIFT, IV 84, loving husband and father, died Saturday, April 9, 2005. P.S. was born on July 14, 1920. He was the fifth child and the first son of Maude and P.S. Barber. He was affectionately called "Bubby" by his family and friends. He was a "quiet, sensitive man, innately spiritual, humorous" and a lifelong member of St. Dominic Catholic Church. He served as member and president of the Legion of Mary. He founded Barber Cabinet Company, in 1948, which is still family-owned and operated after 57 years. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Jane Kelly Barber; his 10 children, Mary Jane Schmidt (Hank), Philetus "Rusty" Barber (Mary), Joseph David Barber, John Kelly Barber (Kaye), Michael Bruce Barber (Candace), Louis Stephen Barber (Betty Carol), Mary Teresa Abell (Mike), Kevin Anthony Barber (Michelle), James Vincent Barber (Evelyn) and Rebecca Ann Burns (Terry); 33 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Bob and Aaron Barber; and six sisters, Margaret Kelly Sr., Frances Barber Sr., Maude Michelle Barber Sr., Catherine Therese Barber, Mary Ann Bowling and Catherine Yancey Edelen. His funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Dominic Catholic Church, with burial in St. Rose Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-8:30 p.m. Monday at Hale-Polin-Robinson Funeral Home, where a prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. His seven sons and three sons-in-law will serve as pallbearers. Contributions are suggested to be made to the Rev. J.T. Blandford Endowment Fund.
